Tour de Brookfield Bicycle Races, Food & Beverages, and Entertainment on Friday, July 15th!

A full day of semi-pro and professional bike races will commence about 9 am on Friday, July 15th on a course circling the City's Civic Center at 2000 N. Calhoun Road.  The day long races will feature hundreds of men and women cyclists from around Wisconsin and the Chicago area, as well as International riders.  The Tour de Brookfield is part of the International Cycling Classic, the oldest and longest running multi-category cycling race in the world, with stops throughout Southeastern Wisconsin and the Chicago area.

This year's event has been expanded to include more food and beverage offerings in the Civic Plaza between City Hall and the Public Safety Building.  In addition, afternoon and evening entertainment will be provided by Brookfield singer-songwriter Nora Collins from 3:30 - 5:00 pm, and by the band Caught in the Act (CIA) from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

Spectators can expect speeds up to 40 miles an hour, and fast- paced action, as riders jockey for position to win sprints.  The Men's Pro Race will start about 6:00 pm, and a strong contingent of International riders is again expected, after last year's rave reviews about the course.

Come down and enjoy racing, entertainment, and something to eat at the Civic Center on July 15th!

We have a few openings left for course marshalls to monitor the race course and assist pedestrian crossings.  If you are interested in helping out for a 3 or 4 hour shift, contact the Convention & Visitors Bureau at (262) 789-0220.

Target Store Wins Approval, Construction to Start By Fall

The Brookfield Common Council voted unanimously on June 21st
to approve rezoning of the site at 12821 W. Bluemound Road to Planned Development District - Commercial (PDD) to allow construction of a 140,000 square foot Target store and related retail development of approximately 34,000 square feet.  The site, on Brookfield's eastern border, was formerly a Quebecor printing plant, had some environmental issues, and had been vacant for several years.

The new Target store will be developed by Ryan Companies, a Minneapolis based developer, and will be owned by Target Corporation.  The store will feature the latest Target design, include a number of energy efficiency measures, and incorporate groceries in about 40,000 square feet of space.

In addition to the Target, a "Junior Anchor" retail space of about 18,000 square feet will be built adjacent to Target, and three outlots will provide for about 16,000 square feet of space for restaurants, financial institutions or other retail users.

Alderwoman Lisa Mellone said, "I believe this Target will be an amenity to the region as a whole.  It's been fully vetted, and I feel confident in making this leap."  The City of Brookfield obtained State of Wisconsin DNR grant funds to assess and remediate environmental issues on the site.  Additional remediation, demolition, and all site preparation costs on the 23 acre site will be borne by the developer.  The development is expected to add about $13 million to the City's tax base.  The Target store is anticipated to employ 150 to 200 people.  Construction should start this fall, with an opening in 2012.

Cooper's Hawk Opens Sixth Location at Brookfield Square

Cooper's Hawk, a Chicago area based Winery/Restaurant group, opened its sixth location at Brookfield Square on June 27th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  Cooper's Hawk is unique in the hospitality industry, in that it includes its own winery (based in Orland Park, Illinois), with a wine tasting room, retail gift shop, full service bar, and modern casual restaurant, at each of four Chicago area locations, one in Indianapolis, and now in Brookfield.

Cooper's Hawk was recognized in 2010 by Nation's Restaurant News as one of four "Hot Concepts" nationally.  The Brookfield location, on the east side of Brookfield Square, features a Napa-style tasting room and gift shop at the front of the store, with the full range of Cooper's Hawk wines and related accessories.  The Brookfield location features an upscale dining room and open kitchen.  The menu utilizes fresh ingredients and is crafted with wine pairings in mind.  Cooper's Hawk produces more than 50 varieties of its own wines.  Cooper's Hawk also features a wine club with more than 20,000 members.  Stop in and see this latest addition to Brookfield's fine dining (and wining) scene.

I-94 Repaving Project Completed, Bluemound Roadwork Started

The I -94 East-West Repaving Project, which involved repaving of the road surface from 124th Street to Highway 16 in Waukesha County, was substantially completed on Monday June 27th.  All three travel lanes in both directions have been opened to traffic, in time for Summerfest and the heart of the summer traveling season.  Some nighttime lane and ramp closures may still occur as contractors complete landscaping, shoulder, and other work in the right-of-way.

Work is now commencing on the resurfacing of Bluemound Road from Moorland Road east to 124th Street and pavement replacement from 124th Street to Mayfair Road (Highway 100) in Wauwatosa.  As with the I-94 project, two through lanes in each direction will be maintained at all times.  Access to businesses will also be maintained throughout the project.  Temporary signs will direct the traveling public to temporary access points to businesses, as needed.
