Greetings!
It's back to school time, a time of groans and complaints from a lot of kids, even though you can tell they're also happy to again be amidst the crowd of their friends. As for me, I'm always ready to return to work after the quiet renewal of summer. Especially this year, since I'm now busy enough to have added a weekend session of my Acting Technique and Scene Study class, Sundays at 10:00. This came about as a result of the wonderful success of my class down at the South Coast Rep Conservatory, and I am so grateful to everyone there for the opportunity to teach with them at a theatre I love so much. We have a terrific, talented group gathering for this class, and in my Monday class as well. There's still room in both, so join us, or check us out with a free audit.
Getting back to work sometimes requires a little extra inspiration to keep us striving for new heights. To that end, I have started posting a Quotation of the Day for Actors and Other Artists on my Pinterest Page, and you can subscribe to that or follow me on Twitter @ArkinMatthew if you could use a little lift. I have also started a new blog, FIRST THERE IS A MOUNTAIN, which will chronicle my efforts as I work with the motivational website 43things. Check it out, and maybe you'll be moved to go after some of the things that in the past you have only dreamed about.
Please come by and check out what we're doing any Monday night or Sunday morning. We'd love to have you. And please to your friends and tell them to get in touch.
Happy autumn to you all, and peace,
Matthew Arkin Matthew Arkin's Technique and Scene Study Class

SCENE STUDY STEPS:
A Primer for the Amateur and the Pro.
Part 2: The First Rehearsal, and Beyond.
You're taking a scene study class, and getting together with your scene partner to rehearse for the first time. Where do you begin? I am assuming that you have already read the play, at least once. (No small assumption when dealing with people taking a scene study class for the first time; see Part 1 of this article.) You have already done some of your own preliminary homework, thinking about your character's circumstances, the relationship between the characters in the scene, what your character wants from the other character. You have not memorized the scene, for reasons that will be touched on elsewhere. And now you are showing up at the home of another actor, someone who may . . . read more . . .

LINDSAY JONES:
Creation, With Sound.
We sit in a theater as we sit in a church or a temple, waiting to be inspired, to be told a story, to catch a glimpse of truth. The lights dim, fade to black, and the theater is formless and empty. Darkness is on the surface of the audience. We open ourselves, and a spirit of hovers over the stage. We hear a sound, or music. It penetrates us, a world is created, and our journey begins. If you're a member of a lucky audience, or a very fortunate actor, that sound or music has been created by Lindsay Jones.
