| In The Spotlight: The Prince of Atlantis & Me! |
It was in January, 2011 that I received a call from Joanne DeNaut, the casting director at South Coast Rep, asking me if I would appear in a sit-down reading of the new play, The Prince of Atlantis, as part of SCR's NewScripts Series. The next incarnation of the piece was in April, 2011 - another reading, as part of the Pacific Playwrights Festival. Now, another year later, we are the festival's main stage production . . . read more . . .

Greetings!
Busy working at South Coast Rep on the world premiere of The Prince of Atlantis, I wasn't sure how I would manage time for my next article. Fortuitous, then, that Lehman College just posted online a transcript and podcast of a talk that I gave there in 2009, as part of their Working Professional Series. It's included here, and I hope you take the time to enjoy it, and send me your comments.
In spite of how tied up I have been with the show, my Technique and Scene Study class is still ongoing. For those inspired to check out the work we're doing, audits are welcome, so drop in on a Monday evening, or to your friends and tell them to get in touch.
And in closing, I just want to say WAHOO!!! SAG and AFTRA have merged. Such great news for all of us who make a living on the stage or screen
Sincerely,
Matthew Arkin Matthew Arkin's Technique and Scene Study Class

There are a lot of actors out there, guys like me, earning a regular middle-class living, sending their kids to school, paying the doctor bills, getting health insurance through the union, who you will never hear of, but they make a living as an actor. So, it's a viable career to pursue, as long as you remember that if you wanted to be a plumber or an electrician, you can be a plumber or an electrician and earn a good living without anybody ever hearing of you. You can earn a good living as an actor without anybody ever hearing of you. Uta Hagen and a lot of teachers who came around in the '40s started to have another idea . . . read more . . .

Triple threat is a phrase often used to describe actors who also sing and dance, but Brett Ryback has a number of other talents at his disposal. His impressive acting resume tells only a small sliver of the story of this multi-talented and prolific artist. In addition to acting, Brett is an award winning playwright, composer and lyricist, with a number of musicals and plays to his credit. I have had the privilege of working with Brett for over a year . . . read more . . .
