Happy Summer!!!

Buy Fresh Buy Local Cape Cod and Barnstable County 4-H are sponsoring a children's coloring contest to celebrate the growing season! The contest is based on the Buy Fresh Buy Local Cape Cod logo. Children draw something they saw or experienced at their favorite farm, farmers' market or farmstand. It can be a fruit or vegetable, a landscape, a farm animal, a tractor or even the farmer! Artwork will be displayed and judged in the Youth Building at the Barnstable County Fair, from July 21-28. Winners in each age group (under 5, 5-8, and 9-12) will be notified via mail following the judging on July 20. Entries will not be returned. Click here to download the postcard and instructions.

Farmers' Markets

July at the Falmouth Farmers Market: For all your garlic-lovers, scape season is coming to an end, but garlic bulbs may appear ahead of schedule-it's been that kind of year. E&T Farms already had bulbs of softneck garlic at the end of June and hard-necks aren't that far behind. Carrie Richter at Peachtree Circle Farms was reporting garlic plant "downers" at the end of June, suggesting bulbs would be ready in July. Besides a large variety of hardneck garlic, she's growing Elephant garlic this year. We're seeing plenty of zukes, cukes and summer squashes. High-tunnel and hothouse tomatoes will be giving way to field tomatoes, cherries first. Corn's just around the corner. On the artisanal front: Fromage Trois is back with its hand-made mozzarella, string cheese, and beautiful burrata, plus green fettucine made from local pea-tendrils and other one-of-a-kind pastas. Green Briar Jam Kitchen has new sun-cooked fruits to taste, including sun-cooked blueberries in vodka. Rein's Real Rye will test-drive a new Swedish rye with golden raisins, cardamom, fennel and orange peel. And Pies la Mode is back with its classic pies and comfort foods. More info, plus recipes, on falmouthfarmersmarket.org, and latest news on Facebook.
