How We Spent Our Summer

Camps, Camps and more Camps!

Little Gardeners. Big Work!

Junior Master Gardener Camp was held during two very hot weeks this summer.  We had a lot of fun picking peaches, blueberries, visiting local gardens and museums around Alabama.  We want to congratulate our newest certified Jr. Master Gardeners:   Stella Ross, Isabella Donner, Temple Coleman, Audrey Williams, Walker Brower, Forrest Hilton, and Ella Pigford.   We also want to thank our returning JMG graduates Emma Shealy, Angie Sutton, Emery Walton, Blythe Danley, and Abby McCormick for all their help with the camps.   We all had a wonderful time and are looking forward to next summer!

Smile and Say "Peaches!"

SCIENCE CAMP!

During Science Camp this summer, we learned all about energy and motion.  We built solar ovens from pizza boxes and cooked s'mores in less than 7 minutes.  Wow it was HOT!  We also had fun building water wheels, experimenting with dry ice during kitchen chemistry, and building stomp rockets that shot 100 feet into the air.  It was a blast!

  Hmmm. Science Experiment or Lunch?

A NEW LOOK FOR THE GARDEN!
The CMS Environmental Literacy Program is proud to announce the expansion of the CMS garden.  A new fence, working cistern, and tool shed have been completed over the summer- a big thanks goes out to Patrick Danley for all his hard work.

During the 2012-13 school year, the ELP will be introducing a new garden curriculum, holding a rain barrel workshop for CMS families, sponsoring a farm stand in the lobby once a week, and holding a naming contest for the new garden.

The ELP would also like to welcome Gail Pless (aka Mrs. Shhhh) as garden coordinator.  Gail has been a docent for many years at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens leading tours for their education department.   Gail will be conducting hands-on lessons in the garden throughout the year.  We are thrilled to have her experience and expertise as part of the program.   So stay tuned for more information on all these exciting changes.

Blooming where we're planted!

The Renneker family planted and cared for two beds of sunflowers over their summer vacation.  They should be ready in late September or early October.  Some of them are already 6 feet tall!  Thank you for helping our campus

A Big Thank You to Charles, Suzanna, PK
