Message from your Public Relations Officer

Greetings fellow Toastmasters,

April showers may bring May flowers but April is a special month for our district.  Our spring conference is just a few short weeks away and includes a visit by International President - Michael Notaro.  The new district officers will also be voted upon at the business meeting held during the spring conference.  We have included a biography section for the district nominees in this newsletter.

I always welcome stories to include in our newsletter.  We have a section called "Toastmasters in Action" where you can show the district how your communication and leadership skills are put into action in the real world.  Imagine the feeling of showing fellow coworkers and friends that you were showcased in a District 10 newsletter.

See you at the spring conference.

Warm regards,

Keith Feador

Members of District 10,

You should all be renewing your dues, as April 1st denotes the dues renewal period for Toastmasters International. I hope things are well in your clubs and improving. By now you've all received your "You're Invited" cards personalized to your club. I sincerely hope these help you achieve two of your distinguished goals of garnering eight or more new members this year.

Visiting clubs all over the district this year emphases the fact that having 15+ or 20 +members is a strategic goal that really helps clubs succeed. The idea of the cards is to help you help yourselves as a club. They were mailed to the president of each club.

I am excited to go into April and finding out where we stand as a district. Get those Dues renewals in! They help your club achieve distinguished status. Remember this: DO NOT HOLD YOUR RENEWALS! You can submit six member renewals to achieve your goal toward a distinguished club point, and then turn the rest in as they are paid.

Seems like I type this every newsletter, but there is a LOT going on in the district. International President Michael Notaro is visiting our District this year. That is extremely exciting! I hope you are all planning on attending the District Conference at the end of April. Please help the District and yourself out by attending the District conference. It is a HUGE learning opportunity for you. Shift your Toastmaster focus up a notch by attending the district conference. There is so much to gain you'd be shocked! Learn about Cleveland, one of the richest areas of the country way back when during the "Millionaire's Row" speech on Friday evening. Check out the DTM rebranding during Saturday morning breakfast. See the New DTM's minted at lunch. See a 60 year Toastmaster honored by TI International President Michael Notaro. Watch Michael's Keynote. Enjoy Friday night's evaluation contest and Saturday's International Contest. AND, attend a Luau while getting your picture taken with Michael Notaro. This is a HUGE honor for District 10. Come out in support by demonstrating how great our district really is. NEWSFLASH - We will have the Store kicked back into gear for the Conference, as well as hopefully being able to accept credit card payments at the door and at the store, making it more convenient for you as customers. We also hope to have a more professional look as a district this time around. I think you'll be pleased.

I'm brief this month because I have a family time heading into April, but I wish you all success as we head into the third quarter of the year. District 10 has been doing great on forming new clubs. We hope to finish the year over 100 clubs in our corner of the globe.

Thank you all for being Toastmasters. I hope you are experiencing "Where Leaders are Made" by completing projects for your own success. I am truly proud to be the District Governor of such a fine bunch of people.

Humbly, yours in Service.

Tony Green Bio

Hello Everyone,

So little time, so many contests! I hope everyone is in the contest spirit right now. We are in the midst of our spring Area and Division contests culminating in the winner of the Speech contest, heading all the way to the International contest in Orlando, Florida. I hope you have an opportunity to make it to some of the contests. Or maybe you are participant. However you are involved, I ask that you get out and enjoy yourself before the final contest ends on April 14th. After that, you can of course see all of the winners of the division contests at the Spring Conference!

By now, all of your clubs should have received customized business cards. The cards were sent out for the sole purpose of being a tool to market your clubs. We ask that you use them in any membership building plan you have to get more members for your club. If your club has low membership, the cards can be an excellent way to get guests, who may turn into members. Even if your club is at charter strength, you still can never have enough members. Looking at it from a totally positive perspective, if your club gives out all 500 cards you have received and gained 10 members, the cards have paid for themselves! I would like to hear your stories of how you used the cards. Please send me an e-mail, phone call, or let me know if you see me around the district. What do you have to lose!

As it relates to marketing, our team is busy at work behind the scenes. Since the last newsletter, there have been some very positive developments in District 10. We have members presently working on rebuilding four clubs with more in store. the goal is to have every club that is eligible to be assigned at least one club coach. Our team has also been involved with helping to charter one club with three more in the works. That doesn't even count the many various leads we have that are still in the early stages of development!  While I have your attention, AI would like to take the time to recognize the members of our team. They are: Mica Roe, David Pritts, Pete Puwani, Deonna Moore, Dave Wiley, Dipak Narayan, Joel Head, Dameka Nickerson, Kate Faggella, David Green, Lynne Blake, Maria Pajak, and Bill Simpson. If you see or know any these members out and about in our district, please take a moment to thank them for their work to improve the district!

That is all, I have to share with you for now. I hope you are really having a great 2012 as a Toastmaster and your personal life. Before I end my letter I would like to leave you with two thoughts. As your Lieutenant Governor Marketing, I am here to serve you to the best of my ability. To that point, I am only an e-mail, phone call, or face- to- face meeting away. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns. Lastly, no matter what your situation looks like, keep pushing if you can. If it looks negative, the status may change once you come out on the other side. Take care, and I hope to see you at the Spring conference or in my travels around the district!

Continuing to serve you,

Tony Green, CTM

Nominated for the Office of District Governor.

DeonnaMoore

My Fellow District 10 Toastmasters:

I am indeed honored to have been nominated for District Governor! This is something that I do not take for granted or lightly.

As a four-year member of Toastmasters, I have spent the last three as a member of the District Executive Council, serving as an Area Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Marketing, and currently as Lieutenant Governor, Education and Training. As the District's Chief Operating Officer, I would bring my experience with building clubs and membership, and ensuring integrity and quality with the Toastmasters Educational Program into this position. I have been blessed to be an integral member of the council during times when the district triumphs, as well as been there to assist with smoothing the road when we have faced adversity with membership and club building challenges. All have allowed me to have a deeper love and appreciation for this district - where we have been, and where we have the potential to go!

I hold several advanced degrees and certifications in the areas of Organizational Leadership and Business Administration, which gives me the ability and knowledge to oversee the district's day-to-day operations, as well as continue to build our district by ensuring that we are focused on the Toastmasters Critical success Factors as defined in our District Mission. My goals and plans as District Governor includes working with the incoming District Executive Committee on a Strategic Plan for the 2012-2013 Toastmasters year, where we will focus on continuing to service the membership through extending our current network of clubs and members, ensuring that we are producing quality and integrity within the Toastmasters Educational program by raising the bar with how we train club officers and the membership. Furthermore, my vision is for District 10 to have a club within every major organization that we service, therefore allowing more people the opportunity to be touched by what we have to offer.

It is my hope that I am given the honor to lead us to the Toastmasters Promise Land! We can and will continue to "Remember the Member", "Achieve Greatness - Together", and become the district "Where GREAT Leaders Are Made"!

I am presently your Lieutenant Governor Marketing. I would like to tell you at this time why I should be your next Lieutenant Governor Education and Training. I started the process of being a Toastmaster in June of 2003. Since I have become a member of the DEC, my growth has been immense in the last 3 years. I see the district on a totally different level. My year as your LGM has educated me greatly on clubs and its members. Add to that the fact I have worked right alongside your present LGET, I am fully aware of what the district needs as it relates to training. And of course, by being the LGM, I can lend support and give advice to my successor if needed. I have talked and listened to members, club officers, Area Governors, and Division Governors about what our district needs. Based on what I have heard, and seen, it appears we need to increase on what our present LGET has done in training. While continuing with what she has done such a fine job of implementing, I will expand the training repertoire even more to make sure we are thorough in offering our members all we can to prepare them to lead. You see, I believe you cannot expect people to succeed if you do not put them in a position to do so. If I am selected as your LGET there will be focused, accessible, comprehensive, and digestible training at every level of leadership in the district. I am fully prepared to make changes to the plan if the situation warrants it. What that means, is I will still continue to listen to the very people I serve, YOU. One of the main objectives is to make sure that no leader in our district is unsuccessful because they were not given the tools to be effective in their position. I believe that if our members are trained for leadership in the right way, club membership growth will be directly affected. Ladies and gentleman, I am not striving for us to just be an improved district, but to have some of the best trained leaders nationally and globally! In short, this iswhy I feel I should be your next LGET!

Debbie Curtis

Nominated for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Education and Training.

I am dedicated to the Toastmasters organization and the learning experience one can have by following the program. Recently, I earned the Distinguished Toastmaster designation. Understanding the Toastmaster program means working the program so that you understand the challenges everyone faces.

Working the Toastmaster program also means that I have supported my clubs by performing officer roles such as, President, Vice President, Education, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms. My District experience has included Area and Division Governor, Fall Conference Co-chair, Spring Conference Marketing chair and Audit Committee Chair.

A challenge of the District is providing Leadership training that is engaging and will draw out those long-term Toastmasters. Members that are new to club and district leadership will naturally attend trainings because those roles are new to them. But how do we make training interesting to a five or ten year plus member? How do we get the excitement back in the Semi-Annual Conferences? I do not have all the answers to those questions but it is important that the quality and variety of the training products the District provides attracts everyone.  I believe in allowing others to grow into their leadership skills so that they can become confident leaders in their personal and professional life. Part of that development includes working with people with different personalities and styles as well as committing to the finished project.

Keith Feador

Nominated for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Marketing.

KeithFeador

Keith has been a member of Toastmasters for almost six years and currently attends the Talk of the Town (#2917) club. He has held many officer roles at the club and district level including Club President, Area 41 Governor, and is currently serving as District Public Relations Officer. Keith likes to work with people, lend a hand with district events such as conferences and educational sessions, practice and hone his leadership skills, and help encourage members to get the most out of their Toastmaster experience. In his spare time he likes to go on adventures with his family, perform handwriting analysis, enjoy the great outdoors, and stay active with life in general. He plans on helping the membership in the district grow by seeking out undiscovered locations for new clubs and by fostering relationships between Northeast Ohio and District 10. Keith also realizes how important it is to keep current members engaged and active within their clubs, and he plans to find creative and lasting solutions to help out clubs that are experiencing membership challenges.

Rick Winrod

Nominated for the office of Western Division Governor.

RickWinrod

I would be proud to serve as Western Division Governor.  I am looking forward to continuing to build a leadership team with the goal of achieving President's Distinguished status in the Western Division.

Please note, however, that if DEC meetings are held on Saturday afternoons, then I will not be in attendance because of an ongoing commitment.  If it is important for you to have your Western Division Governor in attendance at DEC meetings, then you should not vote for me.

On the subject of DEC meetings, in light of rising fuel costs, I feel it is incumbent on District Leadership to consider options for holding at least some of the DEC meetings online or via conference calls. I am a 5-year member of TM.  ACS/ALS inching towards DTM.

I am an entrepreneur who considers Toastmasters to be my secret weapon in business. I am fascinated by the potential for Urban Agriculture in our society.

Currently studying the works of Epicurus.  I Reside in North Ridgeville.

She has served as 2011-2012 Area 12 governor, club sponsor and in the majority of club officer positions. She enjoys cycling the towpath, continuing German language studies, attending dog shows, and raising African Violets.

Nancy says, "Toastmasters has given me so much in the way of networking, team building, and advanced communication skills, that I want to give back to the people who make it all work. I look forward to communicating consistently and reliably with important information to help our division's clubs  thrive and new Area Governors succeed."

A Division Governor may have 15-25 clubs and 300-500 members, which is a big responsibility. We will speak, listen, share and grow together on our path to excellence in 2012-2013!

On Your DTM Journey - Club Sponsor, Mentor or Coach

Marsha E. Friedman, DTM

District 10 has launched a DTM mentorship program. Much like the mentorship program for new members, DTM mentors are here to support your efforts and remove obstacles from your path to success. Our DTM Mentors are ready to step up and provide you with the support you need to join the ranks of DTM. For more information, contact District 10 DTM Mentorship chair,Marsha Friedman.

To become a Distinguished Toastmaster, DTM, you must complete all of the communication and leadership award levels from Competent Communicator to Advanced Communicator Gold and Competent Leader to Advanced Leader Silver. Over the course of the year, we will examine the requirements for various award levels and projects along the Communication and Leadership tracks.

This month, we delve deeper into the Club Sponsor, Mentor and Coach roles. You must serve in one of these roles to complete your Advance Leader Silver (ALS). At the most basic level, these roles vary based on when you begin your work with a club but each role has it's unique challenges and rewards.

Club Sponsors help get new clubs off the ground. Their main role is to organize and market the club, set up regular club meetings, recruit new members and to stay with the club through the chartering process. Up to two Club Sponsors can be assigned to each new club.

Club Mentors are assigned once the club has chartered providing his/her expertise in organizing and running meetings as well as growing the club. The role of the club mentor is to support the club by:

  • Teaching members how to run meetings
  • Introducing the Toastmaster Educational System and Distinguished Club Program
  • Familiarizing club officers with their roles and responsibilities
  • Helping members and officers understand the role of the Area, Division and District Leadership team

Club Mentors do not need to join the club and need not be present at every meeting. Club Mentors must be available to answer questions and to guide both individual members and club leaders. In a nutshell, Club Mentors teach the club "to fish". Up to two Club Mentors can be assigned to each new club.

A Club Coach is assigned to a club with less than 12 members and helps that club to rebuild, recover and achieve Distinguished Club status. The Club Coach has the opportunity to use all of the communication and leadership skills in their toolkit. The job of the Club Coach includes:

  • Building a relationship with the club officers and members
  • Analyzing the club environment and making recommendations for changes and improvement
  • Partnering with the club officers to develop a rebuilding plan
  • Energizing and encouraging both officers and members to believe in the future of the club

As a Club Coach, you have come at a time that club members and officers are often tired and discouraged and your enthusiasm and ideas will be the fuel that helps rebuild the club's fire. Up to two Club Coaches can be assigned to each club.

If you are interested in serving in one of these capacities, contact Tony Green, Lt Governor Marketing at acgitsme@yahoo.com
