Message from your Public Relations Officer
Greetings fellow Toastmasters,
March is already here and with it comes the Toastmaster version of March Madness. We have an exciting spring conference lined up which spans two consecutive days. We have Michael Notaro (International President) as our guest of honor. Early bird pricing is under way but will not last forever. Make sure to reserve your spot at the conference by March 15th to take advantage of the special pricing.
Speech contests are fully underway with the various winners advancing up the ladder for a chance to compete at the district conference. These are great events to attend and most contests are open to the general public for viewing.
Warm regards,
Keith Feador

Message from your District Governor (DG)
Dear District 10, Spring is in the air. It's Sunday morning March 4th. Even though a dusting of snow lay on the deck outside the kitchen window, and the sun won't peek over the horizon for another couple of hours, I know new beginnings are coming. The signs are obvious. You can't help but love this time of the year. The first sign of spring is area contests. International President Michael Notaro has April tickets to Cleveland for the Spring Conference. Darren LaCroix pops by to help us sprout up an advanced humor club. Yes, being a Toastmaster puts an unusual spin on Spring. I mark a big ole' X on March 2nd and sigh. I've already missed the Area 33 Contest in the South. Only 19 chances left until Division contests start rolling. I mull my schedule. I type quickly, realizing today may be the last day I see my kids awake until April 30th...... I wonder what contest life stories, some of which turn into memorable remembrances touching the hearts of other Toastmasters including myself, that I will be hearing..... I also wonder what life stories I will miss with my family. I sip my caramel vanilla tea, and think to myself "Man you really are a kid drinking something named vanilla caramel at 5:15 in the morning". I throw in an extra spoonful of sugar because I'm an adult now, and I can.... Daylight peeks over the horizon at 6:15, as does my second son Nolan's head over the bannister. It's Lego time. He and I are always the first ones up, and Sunday's before church we spend building legos together. I have special times per week with all my kids. His is early mornings. I cover him up on the couch, and let him know I'll be another 10 minutes. I silently bless him for his patience. Another sip of tea lets me know I have plenty of sugar now, and I start thinking of all the things that worry me. How many clubs will decide not to renew in April? Will dues be turned in on time? Will everyone have enough High Quality Judges? Will contests run effectively? Are people getting what they need from Toastmasters? Where are those darn invite cards I need to get sent out to each club? Are the marketing booths helping? Will Michael Notaro offer much positive reinforcement about how I can be a better leader because it is truly needed? Will the seven or eight hot leads turn into real clubs? Where will I find mentors and sponsors for all of these opportunities? Will Darren LaCroix's visit inspire Toastmasters on to new and exciting things? How are nominations for next year rolling along? Will our midyear Audit pass muster? Will the realignments for this year work out? I think about all these things from a District Governor perspective, but I realize there are levels of stress at all points in Toastmasters; Members, club officers, area governors, division governors. We are all one in the same, just at different points in our Toastmaster development. I bite my nails..... I stress for a minute. Then I look out the window. It's Spring: a time of new beginnings. New clubs have sprung up. I've met many inspired Toastmaster Msmbers. Some clubs have been saved. Our District is first in three of four of the critical success factors in our Region. The Trio and District executive committees are busy working on area visits and contests. Things aren't so bad. District 10 is full of strong people, new and experienced. If we don't make distinguished district this year it won't be from lack of trying. The stress melts away a bit, as does the dusting of snow. I realize I fully expect we will make our goals. I smile inside. Being District Governor this year is not so bad, because there are so many Toastmasters in District 10 that help, volunteer and care. I am lucky. Things are pretty good, and they could be way worse. Stress melts into cautious optimism. Nolan rolls off the couch and hugs me. He says "Toastmasters stuff again?". "Yes Nolan". "Is today a good day?". "It sure is Nolan". "We don't have any Lego kits for this morning". I think to myself "Don't worry Nolan. I am the District Governor..... I think we can fix that". I ponder a little more and really end up saying "Don't worry Nolan, I'm your Dad. I can fix this problem. Walmart opens in five minutes". It's time to take off the District Governor hat for a couple hours, and be a Dad. While communication and leadership skills are important, right now Legos are the building blocks of the Future. Happy Spring. Balance in your life is an important Leadership skill. Humbly, yours in Service. Dave Wiley District 10 Governor. wiley@mayfran.com

Message from your Lieutenant Governor of Marketing (LGM)

Hello Fellow Toastmasters, It is great to back with you again to share what is going on in the district. As it relates to marketing, since the last report from me we have chartered 2 new clubs, and have more leads that could turn into clubs! A big thank you to those involved with bringing the district two more new clubs! We are also in the process of rescuing/rebuilding 4 clubs. While the process may present a challenge, I am confident that the outcome for those clubs will be positive and workable situation for their club members. While it is great to have new clubs, it is just as important to provide assistance and support to existing clubs that may be experienceing challenges. In the near future, each club will be receiving 500 customized cards for their club. We are asking that each club use those as marketing tool for their respective clubs. Look at each card as opportunity to reach a new member or be transferred to someone who could be one. I ask that you not underestimate how powerful a tool the cards can be in any plan to inform the community about your particular club. As everyone knows, we are in the midst of speech contests all over the district! If you misssed out on the Fall contests, you have another opportunity to volunteer for a behind- the- scenes role or be directly involved. Of course, you could also be a contestant as well. Either way you choose to be involved, I think it is a rewarding experience. Remember if you are a contestant in the Spring contest, you can advance all the way to the District conference and on through to the competition held in Orlando, Florida at the International Convention. So get ready to compete, learn, help out, or be a fan for your favorite contestant. Which brings me to the District 10 Conference. By now everyone has received notice about the event. You have received the details (location, price, guests, educational sessions, etc.). I am asking everyone to consider attending the conference. Whether you have been many times, a few, or never before, I think there will be something for everyone. The Conference Planning committee has done an excellent job with putting together this conference. If you are looking for a different reason to come, International President Michael Nataro will be in attendance! The committee has put in many package offers to give every member a choice that fits their budget (Make note of the 6 for 5 offer and low Earlybird price.). I ask that you make every effort to join us on April 27th and 28th. Let's make this conference one of the best ever for District 10! Take care everyone and thank you for being members of our district and allowing me to serve you!

Toastmaster Tip
Here is a Toastmaster Tip from Area Governor Nancy Secrist.
One thing people may not like doing is putting their personal phone number or cell number on the internet. Google Voice is a service that allows you to get a free unique phone number that can then be forwarded on to any club officer. As the offices change, your club contact phone number can stay the same. You just need to forward the Google phone number on to the next person. Thanks Nancy for this tip!

On Your DTM Journey
On Your DTM Journey - Advanced Leader Silver
Marsha E. Friedman, DTM
District 10 has launched a DTM mentorship program. Much like the mentorship program for new members, DTM mentors are here to support your efforts and remove obstacles from your path to success. Our DTM Mentors are ready to step up and provide you with the support you need to join the ranks of DTM. For more information, contact District 10 DTM Mentorship chair, Marsha Friedman.
To become a Distinguished Toastmaster, DTM, you must complete all of the communication and leadership award levels from Competent Communicator to Advanced Communicator Gold and Competent Leader to Advanced Leader Silver. Over the course of the year, we will examine the requirements for various award levels and projects along the Communication and Leadership tracks. This month, we'll provide an overview of Advanced Leader Silver.
Here are the requirements for ALS as shown on the Toastmasters International website:
To be eligible for this award, you must have:
- Achieved Advanced Leader Bronze award (or "old" Competent Leader award)
- Served a complete term as a district leader.
- Completed the High Performance Leadership program.
- Served successfully as a club sponsor, mentor or coach.
Here's an overview of each of these requirements:
1. Served a complete term as a district leader - (district governor, lieutenant governor, public relations officer, secretary, treasurer, division governor or area governor). A complete term is defined as having served at least from September 1 through June 30. Those assuming office after September 1 do not qualify as having served a full term.
a. If you are interested in serving as a District officer in any capacity for the 2012/2013 Toastmasters year, simply fill out and submit a nomination form.
2. Completed the High Performance Leadership program - The High Performance Leadership program is an opportunity to practice vital leadership areas including developing a vision, goal-setting and planning, developing plans and strategies, and team-building. As a project leader, you will form a guidance committee who will provide you feedback on your skills and provide input to your project plans. Your HPL project can be related to Toastmasters at any level or can be a work related or community project of your choosing.
a. Order a copy of the High Performance Leadership Program to get familiar with the requirements for this project.
b. If you would like to work on an HPL project for the District Leadership council, contact Dave Wiley, District Governor, for project ideas.
3. Served successfully as a club sponsor, mentor or coach -
a. Club Sponsor - A club sponsor supports the creation of a new Toastmasters club and helps to market the club, recruit new members and help the club through the charter process.
b. Club Mentor - A club mentor takes over a new club from the club sponsor and provides his/her expertise in organizing and running meetings as well as growing the club - teaching the club "to fish".
c. Club Coach - A club coach supports clubs with less than 12 members and helps that club to rebuild, recover and achieve Distinguished Club status.
As you complete each of these requirements, fill in the corresponding section of the Advanced Leader Award application for ALS. Upon completion, simply hand the application form in to your VP of Education and Training for processing.

Toastmasters in Action
Action Story #1 Reginald Sizemore is putting his Toastmaster skills on the air. Co-author of the book "Fight For Your Dreams", Reginald can be heard every Monday from 5:00-5:30 PM on News talk 1490 WERE AM radio.

Action Story #2
Clean Comedy night on February 2nd included many Toastmaster participants and was organized by (left) Toastmaster Brett Tipton. (Right) Donna Komidar looks a bit out of place, not because she was doing comedy, but because she has on a football related sweater as opposed to Hula! (Below) the "Group" hangs after a successful comedy endeavor.
Action Story #3 Citadel of Hope took the Marketing booth on the road to a nearby library. Anja Sassenberg-DeGeorgia (in the photo) did a nice job attracting new visitors, giving this brief summary of her experience.
"It was very interesting to stand there with the booth for the first time at the Rice Library today telling people about the Citadel of Hope Toastmasters club. About half of the people walking by slowed down and looked curious. Then about one third of those that I explained the benefits of Toastmasters to put their name and email address down to be contacted/emailed before the next meetings." The marketing booth attracted two visitors to Citadel of Hope's next meeting. Both turned into members. If you'd like to use a marketing booth, contact your area or division governor. Action Story #4 Terri Fullmer took advantage of registering for the Canton Chamber of commerce professional event. Here is the set up prior to the event. District funds are available for using these booths at shows, professional gatherings, etc... To find out if your event qualifies, send an email with a copy of the application to Dave Wiley wiley@mayfran.com He'll even take care of filling out the registration and paying the entrance fee. All you have to do is take the booth and man it! Action Story #5 Toastmaster Mark Kwasny's book "Miserable Milton" hit the book stands and he's getting publicity for it. Check out a story of his successes here. You Could be the next Toastmaster in Action!
Send an email or call your district leadership to get your story, photos, and links into the newsletter to show District 10 how you are a "Toastmaster in Action."
