Message from your District Governor (DG)
Dear District 10, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and the New Year brings you much joy and success in your personal and business life. As Toastmasters, we are halfway through our year! It is really hard to believe how fast time flies. December brought a new club to District 10 in the form of Cleveland Clinic Finance, located in Independence, Ohio. Onsite, Jovanka Djukic and Dee Simcox did a phenomenal job marketing the new club. Toastmasters Maureen Zappala, Jeannine Murray, Tony Green, and Donna Komidar all deserve a huge round of applause for their relentless pursuit of excellence in getting this club chartered. Jeannine will be mentoring this club the next six months. While they will show up as a January addition, all paperwork was turned in on December 20th. Additionally, 800 more employees move to this site in January and we are hoping for a second club chartering on alternating weeks before the end of February. In December, Darren LaCroix popped by District 10 and visited Swagelok in the afternoon. After a great 45 minute speech, he returned to the stage at Parker Hannifin that evening for another fantastic performance! He is a truly gifted speaker, and District 10 definitely appreciated having him for this special event. Over 100 Toastmasters enjoyed his helpful hints, tips and tricks between the two sites. Special thanks to Maureen Zappala for getting Darren here, Swagelok's group for their afternoon hospitality, and Wanda Tidmore and Parker for hosting the evening event. I have to say, in addition to personally enjoying both of Darren's events, a highlight of a different kind sprung up from this event. Every year Parker employees have a competition where departments challenge each other for donations for Toys for Tots. This isn't just a Toy Challenge, they bring in BIKES. Over 300 bicycles graced the lobby of Parker's Eastside facility as participants walked through this visual display of holiday spirit toward the Amphitheater where Darren LaCroix performed. It was extraordinary and touching; something I won't ever forget seeing. Being a member of the Parker Club, I am lucky to see this every year. This time it was there for others to see. Right time, right place? Yes it was. Five marketing booths have been completed and are ready for use. You will get a glimpse of these at the TLI on January 21st, including instructions on how use these to your club's advantage. Speaking of which, make sure you attend the TLI in January. It is free. If you pre-register, you will get a breakfast voucher. Our Regional Advisor, at District 10's request, will be in attendance. His name is Frank Shilder, and he will be doing marketing visits the Friday prior to the Saturday TLI, and will present to our DEC Saturday afternoon. We hope to draw on his knowledge, helping District 10 to Distinction. How is your club doing? January is a great time to review your Distinguished Club Plan, and finalize who will be doing what to ensure your club's success to Distinguished or better. Put names next to goals! Also, remember the DCP primary requirement : You must have 20 members or better at year end, or a net growth of 5 members from your July base membership number (see your club performance report at Toastmasters.org for your base number if you do not know it). Finally, there was not a December newsletter due to a certain District Governor's (yes that would be me) inability to find 27 hours in a day, but we now resume our regularly scheduled programming. I want to especially thank Keith Feador for all his work on the newsletter this year. He has been a phenomenal Public Relations Officer for the District and his efforts are appreciated. Humbly, yours in service. Dave Wiley District Governor wiley@mayfran.com

Message from your Lieutenant Governor of Marketing (LGM)

Hello Fellow District Members,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends! Well, it is time to get back to the business of being a dynamic district. As I stated in the last newsletter, we now have a group of members who were gracious enough to volunteer to help in marketing the district. The volunteers have been broken down into two separate teams targeted at handling certain functions of marketing. Without further ado, I would like to introduce to you Team 1 (Everything New)! They will be responsible for demo meetings, kick-off meetings, chartering process, and marketing the district to present and potential members. The members are: Dipak Narayan, Demeka Nickerson, Pete Puwani, Kate Fagella, Mica Roe, and Dave Wiley. This team has the potential to make a big impact on our district as we have over 7 potential club leads at the moment. Some leads are at the inquiry stage, demo meeting, kick-off meeting, and close to chartering. With the next newletter, I hope to give you a clearer picture of where we are, as there may be a chartered club by then! So please keep in mind, when you see the above listed team members, they are helping our district grow and improve by dealing with Everything New! In the February newsletter, I will introduce the members of Team 2 ( Rebuild & Rescue, Etc.).
That's all for now ladies and gentleman. Thank you for taking the time to read the newsletter, and if you know members who have not read our newsletter, please encourage them to do so. Until next month, have a great beginning to 2012!
Tony Green, CTM Lieutenant Governor Marketing Phone: (216) 338-7771 acgitsme@yahoo.com

District 10 Performance Review
District 10 at a Glance:
The success factors of District 10 appear as such : We are almost to 50% of our goal for CC's (Good!). We are 60% of the way to our AC Goal (Great!). Clubs and membership continue to be the challenge for the District. I will say club-wise, we have just booked our third new club and have potentials on the horizon, so finishing the year over 100 clubs does appear like a likely target to attain. As the goal is 97, we should make this number. Membership shows us at 45% of our goal. We should be a lot closer to 50%. All in all, membership looks like the biggest challenge.
At the club level, we have 31 clubs with 12 members or less. That is 1/3 of the district. We only have 12 coaches assigned and I know there are a couple on that list that are no longer active. We really could use people as club coaches. There are clubs that have requested a coach and we do not have a placement. Club coach goes toward your advanced leadership track and is a wonderful opportunity to help a club. Looking at the Distinguished Club Plan Goals, half of the clubs in the district have one goal or zero goals turned in! Please make your club DCP a priority, especially if you are an officer. This is a real measuring stick toward the health of your club. As a club, striving to fulfill the DCP should be your primary and ultimate task.
As a member, look at your current Toastmaster goals. Help yourself by setting milestones in the leadership and communication track. Both can be done simultaneously. Make 2012 a year to remember in your public speaking and leadership development. It helps you personally and professionally.

Conversion of FreeToastHost Websites
All club websites utilizing FreeToastHost must be converted to the new Toastmasters re-branded format by February 17, 2012. Two Power Point presentations are available from the district to help with converting club websites over to the new format: FreeToasthostMemberBootCamp.pptx is a powerpoint designed for a club representative to give a presentation to his or her club members on how to use the new website.
The Toastmaster International website also has an excellent section on Free Websites.

On Your DTM Journey
On Your DTM Journey - Advanced Communicator Gold
Marsha E. Friedman, DTM
To become a Distinguished Toastmaster, DTM, you must complete all of the communication and leadership award levels from Competent Communicator to Advanced Communicator Gold and Competent Leader to Advanced Leader Silver. Over the course of the year, we will examine the requirements for various award levels and projects along the Communication and Leadership tracks. This month, we'll cover Advanced Communicator Gold.
Upon completion of your Advanced Communicator Silver, you are just 10 speeches, one presentation and one project away from Advanced Communicator Gold, ACG. The programs introduced at this level challenge you to make the switch from presenter to trainer. Here are the requirements for ACG as shown on the Toastmasters International website:
To be eligible for this award, you must have:
Let's go through each of these requirements in detail:
1. Completed two additional advanced communication manuals - Present 10 speech projects from any two of the advanced communication manuals. Each advanced communication manual contains five speech projects - ranging in length from four to six minutes to 18 to 20 minutes. This requirement is the same for each of the Advanced Communication award levels. You will need to select different manuals for each level.
a. Success/Leadership - This series focuses on leadership skills that are applicable in any organization. Your choices include: How to Conduct Productive Meetings, Parliamentary Procedure in Action, Building Your Leadership Power and Improving Your Management Skills. b. Success/Communication - Communication methods and tools are highlighted in this series. Titles include: Speechcraft, How to Listen Effectively, The Art of Effective Evaluation, Building Your Thinking Power and From Speaker to Trainer.
Your task with the Success/Leadership or Success Communication modules is to fill the role as a seminar leader or coordinator. You can use these seminars as an opportunity to market Toastmasters to the general community and can charge a nominal fee to cover seminar expenses. Alternatively, you can use these modules as training programs for your members or your co-workers.
c. Youth Leadership Program - Coordinate a Youth Leadership Program at a high school or community organization in your area. This is an eight session program designed to help young people develop their speaking and leadership skills. Contact Tony Green, Lt. Governor Marketing, if you'd like to start or participate in a Youth Leadership Program.
3. Coached a new member with the first three speech projects - This task requires you to act as a mentor to a new member. If you have never served in this role, I recommend reviewing the Successful Club Series module, Mentoring, to learn more.
As you complete each of the ACG requirements, fill in the corresponding section of the Advanced Communicator Award application for ACG. Upon completion, simply hand the application form in to your VP of Education and Training for processing.
If you'd like to learn more about the District 10 DTM Mentorship program or get involved as a mentor or mentee, contact program chair, Marsha Friedman. An update from last month's article on Advanced Leader Bronze: The Better Speaker and Successful Club Series are now available in digital editions at NO COST to you! Simply click here for more information on Toastmaster International's digital content.
Next month, we'll introduce you to the Advanced Leader Silver.
