Greetings fellow Toastmaster

I can already start to smell the turkey roasting in the oven and the apple pie cooling on the counter top.  November has just arrived and along comes with it Thanksgiving and also our fall conference.  Speaking of fall conference, the registration deadline is just around the corner.  Make sure not to miss this exciting event that includes a keynote speech from a World Champion of Public Speaking!

As always I am looking for news stories, photos, ideas, and suggestions for the website and newsletter.  Feel free to send me an email or chat over the phone.

Warm regards

Good Day Fellow Toastmasters.

November is upon us. All Area contests have completed and there is only one more Division contest left before the Fall Conference!

Speaking of which!  The fall conference is loaded this year. In addition to having the 2008 World Champion of Public Speaking, LaShunda Rundles, we've picked up an additional treat for this years' conference. Phil Barth, top 10 finalist in the 2011 International Contest, is an Ohio resident and has graciously agreed to stop by our conference and deliver his finals speech. LaShunda will be after lunch. Phil will be after breakfast. I don't know how you can beat eating and great speakers all in a row like that! It doesn't matter how much you eat, you will still be able to stay awake!

The Marketing Booth will be making its grand entrance at the Fall conference as well. Finishing touches are being put on the display as we speak. The backdrop of the marketing booth was given a "sneak peek" tryout at the Southern Division Contest. The marketing booth will be available for functions throughout our district beginning Thanksgiving. Adam Sandler would sing.... Turkey for you, Turkey for me.... The Marketing booth is so nice it may appear on TV....... Sometime after.... Thanksgiving....

October dues should be turned in by this time!vvMake sure your club has renewed. Nine clubs have yet to send in dues and three sit at under six members. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Get your dues in. Does your club have competitors that may be in the District 10 finals? Members must be in a club in good standing and without your October dues turned in, you are not a club in good standing at this point. This applies to more than the first place contestants. If you have anyone that placed, they may end up being in the finals as well based on contestant availability so make sure they are not disqualified on a technicality such as "You are not a member in good standing in a club in good standing". Also, if you turned in your six people to make your goal, congratulations! Make sure you get in the REST of the PEEPS!

December has happenings as well. Darren Lacroix will be stopping by District 10 on December 14th for a one night only appearance!  Well it is not yet carved in stone but in all likelihood this event will be at Parker Hannifin in Mayfield Heights at their beautiful amphitheater.

Finally, we had four kickoff meetings in October. One club chartered, two are close, and one is coming along. If you are in and around the Stow area, we can use your help pushing that club to charter strength. Contact Pete Punwani (Pete.Punwani@chrobinson.com) if you can take a meeting role, or help in any way. I know they had at least five sign up the first night and are quite an enthusiastic group.

Call to action!  We are in need of sponsors, mentors and coaches. A clubs success or failure may depend on it!  These unique opportunities don't roll around every day. If this is something you need for your DTM, please let myself and Tony Green know. Having a list and being able to place you quickly if something pops up that is convenient would be a wonderful thing!

Humbly, yours in service.

Greetings Fellow District 10 Toastmasters!

I cannot believe this is November already!!!!  We will soon be embracing the wonderful holiday season!  This time of year is a good time to reflect on the many blessings we have been bestowed with, our accomplishments, as well as what we want to focus on as we wind down the year!

I am pleased with the educational achievements within our district!  I am elated to announce two additional Distinguished Toastmaster Designations earned in our district, which brings our 2011-2012 TM Year count to six DTM's!  Please send congratulations to:

Ted Gardner - Immediate Past District Governor (Citadel of Hope Toastmasters)
Oakland Lewis (GOOD MORNING! Toastmasters)

To give you an overall educational progress within our district, we have achieved 31 Competent Communicator Designations, 17 Advanced Communicator Designations, 36 Leadership Awards (Competent Leader, Advanced Leader, or High Performance Leadership).  Our goals as a district in order to qualify for distinguished status are 133 CC's, 38 AC's, and 89 Leadership Awards.

What's in a CC?

The Competent Communicator (CC)  Designation is the foundation of a Toastmaster Member's success in improving their overall communication ability.  It is the first manual we work out of as new members, but should also be used as a reinforcement as we continually climb the ladder of communication success.  As we continually help ourselves, we are also helping our club(s) when we achieve a CC designation.  One of the Distinguished Club Program (DCP) points is that two CC's are achieved, and one point is given when two additional CC's are achieved.  There are 95 active clubs in our district - so just think if each club achieved four CC's, the district has earned 380 CC's for the year!  Two of the CC's should come from members who have already achieved a CC.  There is no limit to the amount of designations a member can achieve!  Toastmasters is a work at your pace organization - if you are like myself, holds memberships in multiple clubs, you can achieve a CC for each club you are in!  Remember, it is a two-fold advantage - one for you, as you are working towards your personal and professional development, as well as one for your club, as you are assisting your club on their path to becoming distinguished!  Commit to completing a CC designation before June 30th!  You will be so glad you did!

Message from your Lieutenant Governor of Marketing (LGM)
Tony Green Bio
Hello Fellow Toastmasters,

We are almost finished with all of our speech contests for the fall season! I hope you have had a chance to view, help out, or enter a contest over the last few months. If you haven't, remember in the spring the same process starts all over again. I have managed to get to various contests and see new participants as well as familiar faces. I am now looking forward to the fall conference to see how the finalists do! Please come out and join us at the conference on November 19th. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

The activity level for marketing in the district will pick up soon. Even though we are still looking for volunteers, the teams are ready to go! It is my hope that by serving the district, we will impact as many clubs and members in a positive way as possible. In the upcoming newsletters, I will give you updates on who is involved, what we are doing, and our accomplishments. Look for us at the conference and around the district!

It is four months into the Toastmaster season, and my question to you is have you maximized your membership? Have you stepped outside your box, surprised yourself, shocked fellow Toastmasters in a positive way by what you have done? If you haven't, there is still time and there is no time like the present. No matter where you are in your journey as a Toastmaster, I would like you to consider a positive move/step of some sort. It does not matter whether it is planned out or spontaneous, as long as it is positive and gives more value to your membership. If you are introverted, make your moves behind-the-scenes, taking small inconspicuous steps. If you are extroverted, make sure there are no other toes where you are getting ready to step, and somehow humbly find your own spotlight. In my time as a Toastmaster, I have not come across anyone that has done everything and cannot grow in some way. What I am asking ladies and gentlemen, is that you find your groove and move (smile)!

Take care of yourself, enjoy the upcoming holiday, and keep in mind, you don't have to wait until Thanksgiving to be thankful (smile)!

District 10 Performance Review

Interesting Data about District 10.

Well, the interesting tibits of November are this :

We have 1547 memberships renewed for the Toastmaster year. The minimum goal for the year is 3889. We are way behind on membership renewals. There are still 9 clubs that have not filed dues renewals. Of those clubs, one club is a prision club that moved to another state. 3 clubs have filed less than the minimum amount of dues renewals for the period. The minimum is 6 people renewing.

On the club front, we've booked two new clubs this year. We've also lost two clubs and have the twelve mentioned above in an unsure state at this point.

For our educational goals, we are behind compared to past years on the CC awards. We are doing very well on the AC awards with almost half of our goal met. End of December will be the halfway point of the Toastmaster year. We are now up to three clubs distinguished or better.

On Your DTM Journey - Advanced Communicator Silver

To become a Distinguished Toastmaster, DTM, you must complete all of the communication and leadership award levels from Competent Communicator to Advanced Communicator Gold and Competent Leader to Advanced Leader Silver. Over the course of the year, we will examine the requirements for various award levels and projects along the Communication and Leadership tracks. This month, we'll cover Advanced Communicator Silver.

Upon completion of your Advanced Communicator Bronze, you are just a dozen speeches away from Advanced Communicator Silver, ACS. ACS is the first communication award that introduces scripted speeches. Here are the requirements for ACS as shown on the Toastmasters International website:

To be eligible for this award, you must have:

Let's go through each of these requirements in detail:

  1. Completed two additional advanced communication manuals - Present 10 speech projects from any two of the advanced communication manuals.   Each advanced communication manual contains 5 speech projects - ranging in length from 4 to 6 minutes to 18 to 20 minutes.
  2. Conducted any two presentations from  The Better Speaker Series and/or  The Successful Club Series. Each series includes a variety of scripted, pre-written speeches with PowerPoint slides.
    1. The Better Speaker Series - covers every aspect of speaking ranging from Beginning Your Speech and Controlling Your Fear to Selecting Your Topic and Using Body Language.
    2. The Successful Club Series - has topics relating to club success ranging from Finding New Members and Closing the Sale to Mentoring and Meeting Roles & Responsibilities. Note: The Successful Club Series is also a requirement for Advanced Leader Bronze but you cannot "double-dip"- the dates of your presentations cannot be the same for both awards.

The challenge is to make these scripted speeches your own.  Don't make the mistake of giving these presentations without practicing them first. If you do, you'll find that the speech feels stilted and uncomfortable - it's much easier to use your own words and stories to get these points across.

Select the topics that are of most interest to you and most benefit to your club. The links above will take you to the Toastmasters International Store where you can order the full series or just the two modules that you plan to present ($6.25/module). Simply record the dates of these presentations on your application.

As you complete each of the ACS requirements, fill in the corresponding section of the Advanced Communicator Award application for ACS. Upon completion, simply hand the application form in to your VP of Education and Training for processing.

Next month, we'll move on to Advanced Communicator Gold.
