The nights are getting cool and pumpkins are abound in the stores as trick-or-treat time draws near.  October brings in a busy month in the Toastmaster year.  Club, Area, and Division speech contests are taking place in preparation for the fall conference in November.  We also have many new clubs that are taking shape within the district that could use mentors to help get them off of the ground.

We are currently in the process of revamping our district website and could use suggestions for improvements along with any errors that may be found.  As always I am looking for news, stories, and photos to include with next month's newsletter.

Regards

Good Day Fellow Toastmasters.

Happy October to you. It's hard to believe the first quarter of this Toastmaster year is already over!

Many things are going on in the District right now. It is exciting times!

Nominations have been open for Toastmaster of the Year, Area Governor of the Year, and Division Governor of the Year.  The nomination date was until October 1st, but has been extended through October 15th as many Toastmasters have mentioned they did not know this was open.

We are in the throws of the humorous speech and table topics contests. District 10 leaders have been to numerous club and area contests and can't wait to see the competition advance to the division contests. If you've not been out to any of the contests yet, take a look at the District 10 website and check one out. They are a lot of fun!   Additionally, you should be signing up for the Fall Conference coming up on November 19th. The Saturday celebration features quite a lineup of speakers, including a world champion of public speaking. Take your Toastmaster training to a new level at the fall conference. I know you'll find it an enjoyable experience.

October dues should be turned in by this time! Make sure your club has renewed. Club officers should check the Toastmasters International website under officer resources/reports/district reports/October dues to ensure your club has turned in their Dues on-time for your Distinguished Club Program Credit. Also make sure your officer training has been credited!

October is also bringing some happy news and some sad. Two clubs in District 10 are folding up their tents as they've missed two dues renewal periods. We are losing Jetsetters and Hospitable Speakers. Despite last ditch efforts on both, we will be losing them.   One the opposite side of the coin, we may have a stellar October. There is a possibility we may charter four clubs this month, which would be a fantastic month. Stay tuned for new club welcomings.

Open houses have been going pretty well for a lot of clubs. There have been potential members visiting and joining! Keep up the drive toward excellence!

Call to action! We are in need of sponsors, mentors and coaches. A club's success or failure may depend on it! These unique opportunities don't roll around every day. If this is something you need for your DTM, please let myself and Tony Green know. Having a list and being able to place you quickly if something pops up that is convenient would be a wonderful thing!

Finally, District 10 is putting together a marketing booth with a projected finish date of November 1st. The marketing booth will be available for clubs, areas, and divisions to use at appropriate functions geared toward attracting new members and clubs in District 10! We think this may be a fantastic general selling tool getting potential members in the doors of all clubs. If you know of an event this might be useful for, let us know! Setting up and marketing at an event would be a good high performance leadership project if you are in search of such a project.

Humbly, yours in service.

Hello Fellow District 10 Members

By now you should really be caught up in the contest spirit as we have club and area contests happening everywhere! I hope you have either entered, volunteered, or watched a contest. If not, there is still time to do so with division contests coming soon. Of course if you miss this round, there is always the spring where we get to do it all again.

We are moving forward with plans to make our district bettter with starting new clubs and making our existing ones stronger. The debut of our two marketing teams is planned soon. Are you interested in helping to rescue, rebuild, or locate potential areas where we can grow our club base geopgrahically? Maybe you would like to charter a new club, help put on a kick-off meeting, a demo meeting, help market the district within divisions and to groups/prospects who may be interested in being a part of Toastmasters? Or how about helping to follow up on club leads? If you are, I would like you to consider being a part of one of the marketing teams. We are looking for volunteers to assist in all divisions. The objective is to place a volunteer in the division which they are from so they will have a familiar surrounding to be in. Being on one of the teams can help you with achieving your Advanced Leader Silver designation. If you are interested or want more information, please contact me at  acgitsme@yahoo.com or call me at (216) 338-7771. Oh, and by the way, if you are in a club that needs one of the aforementioned services, please contact me as well. I will look at your situation and determine if there is any way that we can provide assistance to you.

Lastly, fellow Toastmasters, remember this, try not to worry so much about acquiring all the knowledge you can. Concern yourself first with gaining the wisdom to maximize the knowledge you already have. You may have more to offer and share than you think. Until next month, please try to stay positive and safe so our paths can cross if they haven't already!

P.S. Please don't forget to register for the District 10 Fall Conference!

District 10 Performance Review

Interesting Data about District 10.

Well, the interesting tibits of the month are this :

We have 1062 memberships renewed for the Toastmaster year. The minimum goal for the year is 3888. That means we should be somewhere around the 2000 mark. The discrepancy can be explained in various ways. 1) some clubs submitted partial membership renewals and are still collecting dues for the rest of the club members. 2) twenty three clubs have not yet filed their membership renewals out of 97. This number should be a more indicative of where the district stands somewhere around November.

On the education front, two clubs have already achieved four goals in their distinguished club plan! That is great! A.M Akron has six goals turned in. First Class Speakers has five goals turned in. Why do these numbers not reflect in the Educational goals summary? I do not know! They do however show up in the distinguished club portion of the spreadsheet. Some reports update daily, some weekly, and some monthly, so the data occasionally appears out of wack when combined like this.

On Your DTM Journey - ALB

On Your DTM Journey - Advanced Leader Bronze

To become a Distinguished Toastmaster, DTM, you must complete all of the communication and leadership award levels from Competent Communicator to Advanced Communicator Gold and Competent Leader to Advanced Leader Silver. Over the course of the year, we will examine the requirements for various award levels and projects along the Communication and Leadership tracks. This month, we'll cover Advanced Leader Bronze.

Advanced Leader Bronze, ALB, is one of the easiest and most misunderstood awards. Easiest because the requirements are minimal and most misunderstood as there is no manual to follow. Here are the requirements for ALB as shown on the Toastmasters International website:

To be eligible for this award, a member must have:

  • Achieved Competent Leader award and Competent Communicator or Competent Toastmaster award.
  • Served at least six months as a club officer and participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan while serving in this office.
  • While serving in the above office, participated in a district-sponsored club officer training program.
  • Conducted any two presentations from The Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series.

Let's go through each of these requirements in detail:

  1. Served as a club officer for at least 6 months - Any officer role including president, vice president education, vice president membership, vice president public relations, secretary, treasurer or sergeant at arms will fulfill this requirement. Your term of office must be either July 1 through December 31 or January 1 through June 30 and must be completed.
  2. Participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan while serving in this office - The Club Success Plan supports the Distinguished Club Program and is the document used to set goals and assign responsibilities for achieving Distinguished Club status. You simply record the date (month/year) that the Club Success Plan was prepared.
  3. While serving in the above office, participated in a district-sponsored club officer training program - Attending the district's club officer training (or make-up training) in the summer or winter will fulfill this requirement. Keep a record of the date you attended training.
  4. Conducted any two presentations from The Successful Club Series and/or  The Leadership Excellence Series. Each series includes eleven scripted, pre-written speeches with PowerPoint slides.
    1.  The Successful Club Series - has topics relating to club success ranging from Finding New Members and Closing the Sale to Mentoring and Meeting Roles & Responsibilities.
    2. The Leadership Excellence Series - covers every aspect of leadership ranging from Developing a Mission and Building a Team to Motivating People and Resolving Conflict.

Your challenge is to make these scripted speeches your own. Select the topic that is of most interest and benefit to you and your club. The links above will take you to the Toastmasters International Store where you can order the full series or just the two modules that you plan to present ($6.25/module). Simply record the dates of these presentations.

As you complete each of these requirements, fill in the section of  AL/DTM application form for ALB. Upon completion, hand the application form in to your VP of Education and Training for processing.

That's it. If you are serving or have served as an officer, attended training and helped create the Club Success Plan, you're more than half-way home. Give two scripted speeches and you've made a home run!

Every club officer in District 10 should make Advanced Leader Bronze one of their personal goals this year. Don't delay, get started today!

Fall Conference
The District 10 fall conference is just around the corner and being held on November 19th at the Holiday Inn in Westlake, OH.  Registration is currently open and can be accessed on our district website.  Don't forget that we have an early bird discount which is ending on October 20th.

Work Together

Club Open Houses and Kickoff Meetings

October 12th

Keynote speakers are holding an open house from 12:00 - 1:00. Keynote is a corporate club for Keybank! If you are downtown and can attend this event, please email Sally Herzog at sally_j_herzog@keybank.com

October 17th

Vocon is hosting a kickoff meeting at noon. A kickoff meeting is helping a new club to charter and is quite exciting. If you are in the down-town area, and can help out with this kickoff meeting, email me wiley@mayfran.com and acgitsme@aol.com immediately. The district is looking for mentors for this club. Twenty members have already paid, so mentors are needed NOW! Special thanks go to Area Governor Greg Danko, Past International Director, Past Distinguished District Governor Kristal DiCarlo, International Director Gina Cook, Current LGET Deonna Moore, and Current LGM Tony Green. Special thanks goes to Valerie Molinski, the inside person at Vocon. She is the real hero for this club. Here's proof it takes an army and some time!  All these people were instrumental in getting this group on their feet.

October 21st

Cleveland Clinic is hosting their inaugural kickoff meeting at noon. This one takes place at the ITC building auditorium in Independence at noon. Special thanks to Area Governor and club sponsor Maureen Zappala and Division Governor Donna Komidar on this one. We fully expect this club to charter on the 21st. We can use volunteers for roles at this kickoff meeting. wiley@mayfran.com and acgitsme@aol.com if you can help.

October 21st

A number of Toastmasters have volunteered to do a presentation about Toastmasters to the Northeast Ohio Chapter of NAHSE. This is another opportunity to see if we can generate a club from scratch. It will be held at Champps American Restaurant on Landerbrook Drive if anyone is interested in attending. The meeting is at 6:00 PM and presenters include John Niles and Dennis Deegan. Even if we do not get a club out of it, hopefully clubs in the area may pick up members from hearing about Toastmasters! That can only be a good thing.

October 26th

Westlake Toastmasters is hosting an open house from 11:15am - 1:15pm.  There will be food until 12:15pm, then a meeting. This will be at the West Porter Library if anyone is able to attend. Come out for the food, join for the fun.

October 26th

Stow Kickoff Meeting. See the following information from Area Governor Pete Punwani on this club startup. This club is a "SCRATCH" club. Pete and company has assembled a team to put a club in Stow where there wasn't one. UNBELIEVABLE! This will create a template for other cities without clubs. Do you live in a city without a club? Interested in starting one? Email wiley@mayfran.com and acgitsme@aol.com and we will get you rolling.   Pete, Missy Moore, Bill Ferry, Nicholas Cola, Ted Gardner, and Faye Gilbert all deserve special thanks for this one.

Hello District 10! On October 26th, Missy Moore, Bill Ferry, Nicholas Coia, and I will be kicking off a new District 10 club. Stow Toastmasters will be a community club that meets every Wednesday night. Please visit our page and write on the wall. Tell prospective members what you love about Toastmasters, how Toastmasters has helped you, and anything else you think is appropriate. We plan to use our Facebook Page to market this club. Thank you for your help.

Highlights and Happenings

September Roundup

Lunchtime Linguists put on a successful open house and had a high turnout of people visit that were interested in Toastmasters. The club may double in size due to the interest! Go Lunchtime!

Toast of the North Coast also hosted a successful open house and had about five prospective members attend. They hope to build membership as the club is below ten members. Their core is mighty though. And, as a side note, the where's Waldo of Toastmasters, Bill Simpson was there! That guy is everywhere!  District 10 has a real gem of a person in Bill.

October Roundup

The Spanish American club held a kickoff meeting and has roughly 14 people signed up. They are now holding regular meetings and hope to charter soon. We can use Mentors for this club, a Monday evening (6:00pm) Downtown west club. Special thanks to Tony Greene and Deonna Moore for organizing and rolling out this kickoff!
