Greetings!

Welcome to the new Toastmaster year and also the first edition of Leaders and Lecterns.  This is the next step in refreshing the image and communication within District 10.  We have an exciting year ahead with Toastmasters International rolling out the rebrand this month, the district website having a new look, and also our very own Larry Szczepanski is heading to Las Vegas to participate in the Semi-Finals of the International Speech contest.  Please let me know of any suggestions, comments, or concerns with the way we handle communications inside and outside of the district.

Public Relations

Letter from your District Governor
Dave Wiley Bio Photo

Good day fellow Toastmasters!  Welcome to the new Toastmaster year.  I'd like to introduce myself.

My name is Dave Wiley, and I have the honor of serving as your District Governor this year.  I'm going on my fifth year in Toastmasters.  On the club level, I've served as a club President, Vice President of Education, Vice President of Public Relations, and Secretary.  From a District Prospective, I've been an Area Governor, Lt Governor of Education and Training, and am now your District Governor.  I am excited to practice and hone my leadership skills this year!  Five years ago, I'd never have had the courage to step into this role.  I think this just demonstrates the power of the Toastmasters program.  We all join Toastmasters to improve our communications and leadership skills, and Toastmasters gives us a fantastic venue to practice both these avenues.

Toastmasters New Year began July 1.   Just as you might reflect on your goals and aspirations for your life on January 1, you should also do this for yourself on Toastmaster New Years......  What are your goals this year?   Is it time to finish up that Competent Communicator manual you've been working on?  Have you thought about bringing your Competent Leader Manual with you to every meeting and start getting credit for all the meeting roles you've taken on?  The great thing about Toastmasters is we all get to learn and develop at our own pace in a positive learning environment.  BUT, you have to set your goals!  I hope all of you have at least one Toastmaster milestone in your plan for this year.

I'm excited for this year, as we've assembled a wonderful team of helpful people.  Just to demonstrate their commitment; last year we had area and division governor training, then a makeup session.  This year, we don't need a makeup session as the ENTIRE GROUP, with only one exception, attended the first round of training!  Now that is exciting!   You'll see the list of Area and Division Governors later on in the newsletter.

In addition to the great team that will help you out this year, there are some exciting new programs Toastmasters in our District have been working on.  My particular favorite is the DTM mentoring program, which you will read about a little later in the newsletter.  This newsletter will be coming out monthly, and will help guide and inform you though out this year.  If there is something you'd like to see added, or a story that may be helpful to you, please let us know?  Chances are, if you think it would benefit you, it would benefit other Toastmasters as well.  You can email Keith Feador and myself for items you'd like in the newsletter.

While I type this, I hear the music from the beginning of Bugs Bunny playing in my head, and I think that song would serve as a good wrap up for this first letter of introduction.   The final line says "Oh what heights we'll hit......  On with the show this is it!  Good luck in all your Toastmaster endeavors this year.

Of course, my other wish is to serve each and every one of you to the best of my abilitiy. I hope to meet or talk to as many of you as possible and spur you to better heights in your Toastmaster life. Until our paths cross, be safe, and remember everyday that you wake up is a chance to enrich your life or another person who comes accross your path.
