Annika Fjelstad, TCGIS Director
Dear Families,

We would like to remind you that the dates listed on the calendar from
the PTO about upcoming testing dates have been changed. There is no
testing scheduled for the week immediately following our return from Spring Break. The reading MCA tests for grades 3-8 will be held on April 17th-18th instead. We will have a second round of math MCA testing on April 23rd-26th; 3rd and 5th grades will test on Monday and Tuesday (April 23-24th) and 4th, 6th and 7th grades will test on Wednesday and Thursday (April 25th-26th). The 5th grade will take the science MCA tests on May 8th-9th. The third round of Math MCA testing, held May 14th-15th, will be by referral only. Individual letters will be given to parents of students who will be re-testing in math.

Please mark your calendars for April 15th. Our 7th graders and their parents have organized a fundraiser at the GAI for the 8th grade capstone trip to Germany. It should be an exciting program of quality dance and music. Please see below for further information.

We wish you a restful spring vacation,

Band Instrument Petting Zoo
April 13, Grades 4-7
Instruments

On Friday, April 13 a representative from Schmitt Music will be at TCGIS to give students a chance to try out a band instrument! Krista Johnson will also be available to help students and answer questions. This is a chance for kids to see how they like the instruments, and if there might be one they wish to play. The available instruments include flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion (bells, practice pad, snare drum).

Parents are invited to attend, but we will also hold an after-school "open house" on a future date when you will be able to talk to the Schmitt representative about renting.

Please note that you do not have to rent or buy an instrument from Schmitt Music to participate in the band. If there is another music store that you prefer, please go to them! Likewise, if you have an old instrument in the closet, dig it out! But perhaps have it looked over at an instrument repair shop, to make sure everything is in good working order.

Questions can be directed to Krista Johnson at monk2miles@comcast.net or at 612-209-3396.

It's Time for School Board Nominations
School board elections coming up in May

This year's school board elections will take place on Friday, May 18th. We will be electing three new members to our nine-member board of directors. The board plays a crucial role in providing direction, vision and continuity for our growing school community. We hope that you will give serious consideration to volunteering for a board position, or will take the time to recommend someone who you think would be willing and able to support the school in this way. Please click here for more information about the TCGIS school board and the election process.

BenefitCapstone Benefit Event
Family friendly fun!!

When: Sunday, April 15th, 2:00 pm
Where: Germanic-American Institute, 301 Summit Ave
What: Live performances by TCGIS students, teachers and parents; Kaffee and Kuchen; games and story time; craft sale
Suggested donation: $5 for adults, free for kids

Come and join the TCGIS 7th grade students and their friends for an afternoon of dance, music, Kaffee und Kuchen and more to help support the first Capstone Trip to Germany.

In March of 2013 the first graduating class hasplane an opportunity to travel to Germany for a two-week "Capstone Experience." The Capstone will provide students with the opportunity to integrate and apply what they've learned during their time at TCGIS and to experience Germany first-hand. The Capstone Experience is the culmination of a TCGIS education and is planned for all future 8th-grade classes at TCGIS. Families are expected to cover costs unless they qualify for need-based scholarships. Our 7th graders are working hard to make this dream a reality for all of their classmates and have organized several fundraising events, including this one.

All proceeds from this event will go directly to the "Capstone Fund" to pay for need-based scholarships and for teacher expenses.

Your support is most welcome! For more information about the Capstone Experience, please click here.

Update from the Lunch Room
Update on TCGIS's beef options

TCGIS has been following the USDA's recent decision to use Lean Finely Textured Beef in school lunches this spring. As of next fall, schools will be able to choose whether or not the product be made available to them. We have requested for the time being that our caterer not use this product in our lunches and that an alternative be provided for menu items containing this product. We will be meeting with our caterer soon to discuss options for the rest of the school year and next year.

Questions may be directed to sbailey@tcgis.org.
