Elternbrief | November 17, 2010 |
Dear Families,
Give the the Max Day on November 16th was great success. We garnered over $12,500 from almost 100 donors, adding to the $9,300 matching fund contributed by TCGIS Major Donors. In addition, we won a $1,000 Golden Ticket grant prize from GiveMN. Each donation logged on the GiveMN website was registered to win one of these prizes on Give to the Max Day, and it was (thanks to one of our donors) our lucky day! This puts our total donations for one day at nearly $23,000! An enormous THANK YOU to everyone for donating and spreading the word about our school.
We're not the only ones who were excited about the participation in our community; KARE 11 news saw the boom in donations to TCGIS on the GiveMN website and called us up to do a story! If you missed it on the news on Tuesday, check it out online here: http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=882625. And of course, if you missed Give to the Max Day, it's never too late to donate.
We received feedback on recent parent-teacher conferences from both parents and teachers. In general, the feedback about having children present as well as the goal-setting format were well received. There is a diversity of opinions in the community about the role grades can and should play in communicating at various times of the year and stages of development of children. We are aware that registration had some difficulties. Technical problems combined with a new scheduling structure in middle school and late invitations to bring along children led to scheduling frustrations for many. These are problems we can and will learn from. Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback. With open communication, we can continue to fine tune the ways we work together to support students.
I want to give a round of thanks to Jesse Zibble, Peter Clark, Aaron Grenz, Peter Huxmann, Valentin Solakhau and Linda Michel who serve on our Technology Committee. Their ever-present guidance and support is crucial to the smooth functioning and maintenance of the computers we have at school. THANK YOU! German Language Bookfair and Library Open House
Looking for the perfect gift for your German reader (which may include yourself)? Wanting to expand your German book collection? Wishing to raise funds for the TCGIS school library?
Look no further... The library committee will place your German book order through globalbooks.de, which will waive shipping charges to our school and in addition donate a portion of all orders back to TCGIS!
Not sure what to order? The library committee, with support from our teachers, has compiled a list of recommended children books with suggested grade levels. Also included in the list are dictionaries specifically for elementary school children. For dictionaries, we accept donations and provide scholarships. The order is not limited to the list though. Any book available through globalbooks.de can be ordered.
Need additional book ideas? Wish to tour the TCGIS library? The library committee will host the following open houses:
Friday, November 19 - 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, November 20, - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm,
The last two coincide with the TCGIS PTO 2nd Annual Craft & Bake Sale. Library volunteers will be available to show you around and may help you with your individual book order.
Order forms are due by November 22 with pre-payment by check (to TCGIS). We will pool orders at an exchange rate of 1:1.40.
Thanks for supporting the volunteer-run TCGIS library!

Art News
It was so great so see so many of you at the Landmark Center on the 7th for our Martinstag celebration! I want to give a heartfelt thanks to the following parents and volunteers who worked to prepare materials so that the students could make their lanterns in Art class: Renee Moelders, Jill Ravensborg, Alexandra Weeding, Kami Blackwell Kinney, Ann Mockenhaupt, Kelly Huxmann, Ilona Lange, Amy Steege, and Martha Elliot! Your work could be seen in the lovely lanterns and glowing faces that day. Also a big thanks to Ina Elliot, Leslie Watson, Kordula Coleman, and Mickey Jurewicz-Gruenheid for helping the second graders make mosaic stepping stones that will hopefully soon further decorate our wonderful new playground. Danke! If you have any questions or concerns about our Art classes, please contact me!

Kindergarten In Kindergarten we have continued to learn about the four types of art that artists make. Most recently we learned that a still life (Stillleben) is a picture of "stuff on a table." This week we will end with abstract (abstrakt) pictures, painting what we hear in a piece of music. The classes also made lanterns for Martinstag using fall leaves.
First Grade In first grade, students made animal lanterns to celebrate Martinstag. We have also spent several weeks working with the Art Element of space, learning some of the "tricks" artists use to show on a flat sheet of paper that things in a landscape are farther away or closer to us. We painted jungle pictures like Rousseau using these "tricks."
Second Grade The second graders are continuing their studies of the Elements of Art. We learned that texture is what something feels like, and finished making collages using real textures. They also made very nice "Sonne, Mond und Sterne" lanterns for Martinstag. Next we will be looking at how to show space in a still life drawing.
Third Grade The third graders created symmetrical pictures or designs for their Martinstag lanterns. This week they will be finishing up learning about the woven blankets of Navajo, a Native American group in the southwestern United States. We have analyzed the rug patterns and are creating our own symmetrical rug designs.
Fourth Grade In fourth grade we have been learning about the German Expressionists and their use of colors to show emotions. We learned about the backgrounds of some of the Expressionists and what it means to belong to an art movement. We are finishing up our own expressionistic paintings, using unrealistic colors to convey feelings.
Fifth Grade In fifth grade recently we have drawn some still life objects and tried adding shadows to them. We learned that it is sometimes difficult to draw what you see and not what you know is there. Other challenges students faced were drawing the objects in proportion and making them look three-dimensional using shading.
Sixth Grade In sixth grade we are currently learning about the art of ancient Egypt. We have done some reading about Egyptian pyramids, jewelry, sculptures and wall paintings. This week we will be posing for photos like our favorite Egyptian sculptures, and painting our own everyday scenes in the style of the ancient Egyptians. |
Call for After School Activity Instructors
Hello everyone. It is time to start to put together our plan for Winter session After School Activities. Winter session will run for 11 weeks from January 3rd - March 18th.
We will publish the schedule on Tuesday, November 23. Registration will close on Friday, December 10. If you have been thinking of offering an after school activity, now is the time. Definitely we will be offering lots of music possibilities, drama, gymnastics, field hockey, wood working and several courses with the YMCA. Some new activities on the horizon include marital arts, Chinese, and G.I.S.T. (Greening Initiative Student Task-force). Cheer leading remains an untapped market, also, chess is opening up, as I just don't have enough days in the week to do all I want to offer. I would gladly lend anyone who would like to lead chess my chess sets. Also, if there is anyone interested in leading G.I.S.T. with me, please let me know, as I hope to have too many students for one person. There are a few new things will we start to implement for the winter session: We will have a minimum 1:15 ratio for instructors: students. There will be a $5 administrative fee per registration. This will cover administrative costs and provide scholarships for some students on an as-needed basis. Deadline for inclusion of an offered activity in the announcement is Monday, November 22, 5 pm. For questions or suggestions please contact Scot Stephenson at: sstephenson@tcgis.org

Meet Josepha Rehse, Amity Intern
Hello! My name is Josepha Rehse and I am the current intern in class 4a. There I work together with Nicole Halvorson. I enjoy working with her and with the kids very much. It is nice to finally be in a classroom where I can work and learn with kids instead of sitting in a lecture hall where somebody is trying to teach you how to behave and teach in a classroom. Although I already did several internships in German schools, I never got the chance to stay in one classroom 7hr a day/four days a week. At TCGIS I finally have the chance to improve my practical teaching skills and learn how students react to methods and ideas that I had only talked before in theory.
In Germany, I grew up in Berlin. Although I love the city, I started to study Mathematics and English to become a teacher in Goettingen, which is a nice and small city near Hannover. It is a traditional university city (the university was founded in 1737) and living and studying there was great. This August I finished my studies and I will start my first proper job as a teacher in Germany at the end of January 2011.
Working as an intern at TCGIS gives me a great opportunity to prepare for my first fulltime job in Germany. During my stay here in the Twin Cities I live with the Dahlberg family. Their daughter Flannery is in grade 3B and Maewyn is in KB. I am very happy that they welcomed me into their family, and I love living with them. Through them, I have a great opportunity to learn a lot about America and the life here.
Click here to see a picture of Josepha, Flannery and Maewyn.
This semester, TCGIS welcomed twelve interns from Germany and Switzerland into our classrooms. Ten of them are hosted by TCGIS families. Amity interns are vital to the success of our students and to our school. Consider hosting an intern in your home! More information from the Amity Committee to follow as the need arises.
