Elternbrief | November 3, 2010 |
Dear Families,
Successful visit from German government on Monday The head of the development of German schools in North America said that he has been in thousands of schools and that he knows how to get a feel very fast for a school climate. Ours he said was "beeindruckend" - makes an impression. The visit as a whole was very affirming. We were told we were the fastest growing German school outside of Germany on the planet. They were very interested in our success and those of us in the planning group are excited about next steps forward.
Conference Wrap Up Teachers are grateful for the recent opportunities to meet with families during conference time. We always want feedback on how we're doing at not only educating your children but also in our success with getting you the information you need. If you did not receive a form to evaluate your conference experience, you can obtain one here.
Parent feedback schedule As a young school we continue to develop and refine our evaluation and reporting systems. This year we have four opportunities to give you feedback on your child's progress. We have school conferences in November and February. You will receive report cards in January and June. Students in the middle school (5th grade and up) will receive letter grades. Supply Fee Reminder Please remember that we request a $35 per semester payment to assist with supplies. Payment arrangements can be made to suit your family's needs. Click here to access a worksheet where you can indicate a payment plan, a request for scholarship or an ability to contribute to a scholarship to support families who are not in a position to make this contribution. These sheets were due at the end of October. We're still accepting them. Please let us know your plan. Nov. 16th Give to the Max Day! We are successfully raising matching funds for our annual appeal that will be coordinated through GiveMN next Tuesday, November 16th. I'll be excited to share the details with you soon. If you have grandparents or relatives who you think would be willing to support the school financially, you can send me their email contacts directly and/or plan to forward them the fundraising letter that will come out Friday. Our target will be to support the Amity program, the success and importance of which we know you know well!!!!
THANK YOUS As always we are indebted to the many people in the community who help us in many ways.
· Thanks to Molly McBeath & Laurel Clark, Chris, Anna & Natalie Weimholt, Gina Vader, Cora-Rose, Jakob & Nick Michel for cleaning, organizing and making us look our best. · Thanks to Herr Solakhau who through the Performing Arts program is building not only musical and performance skills for individual students, but is strengthening bonds of community within classrooms and throughout the building as the whole by bringing us together in recent performances. This coming Friday he has arranged for the Flemming Family to give a Thanksgiving concert. You're welcome to join us at 1:30 · Thanks to Ben Schneider & Andrea Zibble for creating the map showing where our families live. It's an impressive new display in the front lobby area that shows visually how far people drive to participate in this dynamic community. · Thanks to Maiken Givot for generous donation of 3M products to the school · Thanks to the hardworking library committee whose names I really must get to you soon. · Thanks to the PTO for sponsoring the Flemming Family who will perform at school this Friday at 1:30 and all the other millions and trillions of other ways you all support us as individuals and a community. · Thanks to Lisa Kjellander, Kelly Huxmann, Elaine White and Nicole Grenz who helped make Picture Day a success. · Belated thanks to Britta Walker and Chris Weimholt for their help during lice checks. · Belated thanks to Silke Moeller for her help creating the database used for this year's school directory. "It takes a community to have an effective school." Thanks for your part: time, money, insight. It's all appreciated. German Language Bookfair and Library Open House
Looking for the perfect gift for your German reader (including yourself)? Wanting to expand your German book collection? Wishing to raise funds for the TCGIS school library?
Look no further... The library committee will place your German book order through globalbooks.de, which will waive shipping charges to our school and in addition donate a portion of all orders back to TCGIS!
Not sure what to order? The library committee, with support from our teachers, has compiled a list of recommended children books with suggested grade levels. Also included in the list are dictionaries specifically for elementary school children. For dictionaries, we accept donations and provide scholarships. The order is not limited to the list though. Any book available through globalbooks.de can be ordered.
Need additional book ideas? Wish to tour the TCGIS library? The library committee will host the following open houses:
Tuesday, November 16 - 8:15 am to 9:45 am, Friday, November 19 - 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, November 20, - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm,
The last two coincide with the TCGIS PTO 2nd Annual Craft & Bake Sale. Library volunteers will be available to show you around and may help you with your individual book order.
Order forms are due by November 22 with pre-payment by check (to TCGIS). We will pool orders at an exchange rate of 1:1.40.
Thanks for supporting the volunteer-run TCGIS library!

Meet Philip Meud, Amity Intern
My name is Philipp Meud and I am 23 years old. I am from Koblenz, Germany. I want to be a high school teacher in Germany and have studied for five years. I studied secondary education in both English and physical education at the University of Mainz. I will begin my final exams when I go back to Germany.
I live with the Kompel family. Florian and Kim have two kids. Jackson is in 3rd and Leo in 2nd grade. I like them a lot. I feel included in the family life and they do many nice activities with me, so that I experience a lot and see much of the region.

I teach Sport at the school, so Mandi Rosenthal is my supervising teacher. Unlike most of the other interns, I do not teach one class only, but all, which means that I know every student at school. I have really enjoyed my first two months at TCGIS and I definitely like it here. Working with the younger kids was kind of unfamiliar to me in the beginning since I am used to working with kids from 5th grade onwards. But I have got accustomed to it rather quickly and it is a very nice experience.
Since the beginning of October I teach the after school activity field hockey. I like this class a lot because I am responsible for it and it is therefore kind of my own class.
This semester, TCGIS welcomed twelve interns from Germany and Switzerland into our classrooms. Ten of them are hosted by TCGIS families. Amity interns are vital to the success of our students and to our school. Consider hosting an intern in your home! More information from the Amity Committee to follow as the need arises.

Talent Fair at the GAI
Calling all parents and students! We are looking for participants for the 1st Annual GAI Talent Fair. Before you dismiss this with a regretful shake of the head (I don't have talent!), let us explain. We would like to exhibit a full range of creative interests: music, art, recitation and storytelling, cooking, various collections, (stamps, heirloom household items, dolls, etc.). Our newly founded German Model Railroad Club will have a new "Module" layout in HO gauge. This is your chance to share your interests and Leidenschaft with the community! Herbert Engelmayer, GAI board member and head of the cultural committee, along with Nancy Sogabe, Vienna Community Arts Development Director, will help organize this event for GAI members. The Talent Fair will be on Sunday, March 6, from approx. 11:00am to 5:00pm. We will have the whole "Haus" on Summit for display and activities. We need to have a list of interested participants by December 15, 2010. Contact Herbert or Nancy at 651-773-9525.

Performing Arts News
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thanks to all participants in the St. Martin's Day Celebration last Sunday: 2nd graders, 5th graders, TCGIS Strings with Sylvia Oxenham, TCGIS Choir with Herbert Engelmeyer and many others who made this event possible.
A special thank you to kids who are not TCGIS students but who are very close connected with us: Zoe Breithaupt, Joschua Eufinger and Elizabeth Weimholt.
Speaking of events I would like to ask you to share your pictures and videos with me. I don't have many yet. And again: all passionate snapshooters are desired at performances. The goal is to create the TCGIS memory!
Thanksgiving with The Flemming Fold The next event will happen this Friday, November 12th. Thanks to the generosity of PTO, our school was able to invite a musician family from New Prague. The Flemming Fold will perform country, gospel and yodel music, both in German and English. I'm very glad to announce the concert that will take place in cafeteria at 1:30pm. Everybody is welcome.
For this event, I am looking for volunteers who would be able to help with setting up the cafeteria and carrying the equipment. The time is 1:00pm. Thank you!

News from "Vienna"
Ein dreimal Hoch für unsere Chorkinder! Three cheers for the Jugendchor! Their hard work in after-school rehearsals paid off with an excellent performance at the Landmark this Sunday.
Look for them at their next assignments at the GAI Open House on Sunday, November 21 and at the Nikolaustag on December 5. Strike up the Strings!
We all appreciated the lovely performance by the TCGIS String Ensemble this past Sunday at Landmark Center. If your child is interested in playing a string instrument consider enrolling in the beginning strings class offered by Vienna Community Arts this coming January. We will offer a small group class for beginners in Violin, Viola, and Cello.
The classes will be limited to four students each keeping them at an affordable price. Group classes are the best way to try out a new instrument. (Purchase of instrument is not necessary; we can rent them out).
Our instructor, a member of the Rochester Orchestra and conductor, teaches for VCA on Tuesdays. We would like to plan group classes at TCGIS on this day. He is working on German arrangements for beginning students. Contact us: 651-773-9525 for more information. |
