ElternbriefNovember 3,  2010
Dear Families,

I circulate through the school each day to get a sense of what is happening in the different classrooms. Each day I hear a lot of German, I see focused reading and children interacting in small groups, and inspired teaching and joyful learning. It's a privilege to see effective immersion education in action so regularly.    There's a lot to celebrate in these halls and classrooms.  Make sure you thank your child's teachers for the gift of planning, caring and organizing they do each day.

Conference Registration If you have not registered for conferences yet, please make sure to check in at Virtual Paragon at http://www.virtualparagon.com/tcgis/conference/ and do so. Conference registration closes on Wednesday night.

Punctuality  We close the glass doors in the front office at 8:15.  If you come in after that, you must sign in as tardy at the front desk.  Students should be fully settled into classrooms and ready to learn by 8:20.  Those who come earlier tend to be more settled and focused, having had a chance to check in with teacher and friends and locate their learning materials. Please aim to be here by 8:05 to leave room for unanticipated delays. If your child is chronically late, expect a call or notification from your teacher. Thank you for helping not only your own child, but the whole  community be ready to learn.

Flu Shot Clinic  We've scheduled a flu shot clinic at school for next Tuesday, November 9th after school. This is completely voluntary. It is offered as a convenience to you. You can register adults and siblings from the school as well as students from TCGIS. We need 25 individuals to run the clinic. Please call the front office to register in advance so the nurses can bring the appropriate amount of vaccine.

Upcoming End of the Year Appeal  Last year, we had an amazing show of support in a November fundraising drive. We raised $17,000 on a single day of soliciting donations, organized to support non-profits statewide by GiveMN.org. This year Give to the Max Day is scheduled on Tuesday, Nov. 16th and we plan to participate again. Focusing on a single day helps streamline resources from our administration and focuses our annual appeal. As State budget support becomes ever more constrained the quality of our program is sustained through donations.  This is most clearly evident in our 100% parent funded highly successful Performing Arts program. Next Friday, you will receive a fundraising letter encouraging those who are able to make financial contributions to support the school. We encourage you to think of friends and relatives you might forward it to. It is through this network of extended family that we met our goal last year. Our hope is to surpass last year's goal in a focused effort to sustain our Amity aide program.

Supply Fee Payment

Our school, like all other schools, is struggling to find ways to keep our programming levels consistent in a time of reduced revenue and financial uncertainty. Last year, the school asked parents to help pay for the cost of consumable student materials that the school purchases in bulk from Germany.  When this school year's budget was approved in May, it again included the parent contribution for these supplies.

The Board requests that families make a $35 per semester or $70 annual contribution per student to cover the cost of disposable materials such as writing and math notebooks.    In some schools, families would purchase these supplies as part of the supply list, but because we have opted to use authentic German materials, it is both more convenient and more cost effective for the school to buy these materials directly.  This year the school bought many of the supplies such as folders and pencils that families have previously brought in at the beginning of the year, because we determined it was more economical to buy in bulk. These costs are included in the annual supply contribution.

Payment arrangements can be made to suit your family's needs.  Click here to access a worksheet where you can indicate a payment plan, a request for scholarship or an ability to contribute to a scholarship to support families who are not in a position to make this contribution.

Thank you to those families who have already turned in their payment for this year.

We initially requested that you turn in this Payment Plan Worksheet by October 26th.

Performing Arts News

Upcoming events:

St. Martin's Day is approaching. For November 4th, we will need volunteers to set up the cafeteria (cleaning, setting chairs, moving piano etc.). I will start with preparing at 1pm. Your help will be appreciated. The performance starts at 2:15pm. In the last month, students have repeated "old" St Martin songs and learned new ones. We will sing them all together. Also the 2nd graders will perform a St. Martin story. Furthermore I'm glad to announce that the TCGIS Choir (with Herbert Engelmayer) and TCGIS Strings will participate in this event.
On November 7th you all are welcome in Landmark Center. Bring your children and friends. The celebration will start at 4:00pm, the TCGIS performance will be from 5:00 to 5:30pm.

Thanksgiving Thanks to the generosity of PTO, we were able to invite an artist family to our school. They will visit us on November 12th. In the program, there are traditional German yodeling as well as gospels and country music. Consider this concert as a Thanksgiving present from PTO to your children

By chance I would like to remind you to send me pictures and tapes from the last event (Halloween).

As I mentioned in my previous letter we need volunteers who would be working on school memory. If you interested in videotaping and photographing you are more than welcome.

In many grades, students have started dancing. I am trying to offer students a cultural and historical variety of dances. The program includes group/circle dances as well as couple dances. Basically, children enjoy dancing and have a lot of fun. In upper grades, students struggle sometimes with couple dances because boys and girls are supposed to dance together. For me it is an evidence of how important the dances are. While encouraging students, I point out that couple dances are nothing else than work in groups of two. I hope dancing will teach students to better communicate with each other, to better understand and to respect the opposite gender.

Kindergarten: Students learned songs such as "Alle meine Entchen", "Es gab eine Mutter", "Zehn kleine Zappelmänner" etc. And they also have learned the dance "Liebe Schwester, tanz mit mir".

1st grade: In the last few class periods, students were learning the slavic dance "To the river".

2nd grade: Students have been involved in St. Martin project. You can see the results on this coming Thursday and Sunday.

3rd grade: Students have learned "Flaschensong". They also have started a virtual jorney to other countries. The first station was Israel. We sang "Hevenu shalom alechem" as a greeting and danced "Zemer Atik". We have also started to work on an Ukrainian dance. In November, 3rd graders will start working on the shadow puppet theater. I'm glad to announce this project because it will be linked with the German and Art curriculum and will be a part of the unit about fairy tales.

4th grade: As part of music theory, students have learned about the major scale and rhythm. They also have started dancing Menuett. Next week, students will play recorders. Therefore I have a request: please send in the next week the recorders with your children to school (4B on Tuesday and 4A on Thursday).

5th grade: Students succesfully completed the Totentanz project and presented the Totentanz last Friday. I would like to thank to all participants for the great performance, and in particular to the 6th grade for decorations and music support. In November, we will start a unit about Native Americans. By chance I will ask you for a donation: If we will happen to have a pumpkin students will make their own water drum. Please contact me if you are interested in this project.

6th grade: After the unit about medieval music we have made a jump in the time and have learned about contemporary music and in particular about Rock'n'Roll. We will continue in December. For December I'm planning to invite musicians from the Avalon school. They could tell our students about music that they are playing and show their skills in a jam session. I'm also planning to invite a person who could teach students Tango.

November Stammtisch at the GAI

On Tuesday, November 9, 11:30 to 1:30, our regular monthly German luncheon features music by Robert Schumann celebrating his 200th birthday.  Herbert Engelmayer will perform with soprano Nancee Carpenter and alto Dana Terres seldom heard Lieder by Schumann.

Reservations are necessary.

Talent Fair at the GAI

Calling all parents and students!  We are looking for participants for the 1st Annual GAI Talent Fair.  Before you dismiss this with a regretful shake of the head (I don't have talent!), let us explain. We would like to exhibit a full range of creative interests: music, art, recitation and storytelling, cooking, various collections, (stamps, heirloom household items, dolls, etc.). Our newly founded German Model Railroad Club will have a new "Module" layout in HO gauge.

This is your chance to share your interests and Leidenschaft with the community!

We will have the whole "Haus" on Summit for display and activities.

We need to have a list of interested participants by December 15, 2010.
