Elternbrief September 22, 2010
Dear Families,

It was great to have the whole school together to celebrate our new and ever-improving play space this afternoon. The rain garden is slowly coming into being and boulders have been delivered. We're ever grateful for the vision, persistence, sweat and patience of our organizing team.

Remember that students need to be in their classrooms by 8:15.  Please aim to arrive by 8:05 so that you have a little time for travel delays and for your child to take off his or her coat and put things away before the day begins. Regardless of whether children are working on quiet individual work or gather immediately into a group, their day begins at 8:15. Please do all you can to support your child in being punctual. A culture of arriving at the last moment affects the whole classroom.  Thanks for your support.

We also wanted to clarify our process at dismissal time. Kindergarten parents should come into the building to get their students. We ask parents of all other students to please wait outside. It's a busy time in the hallways and often difficult for groups to come through when the lobby is full of people.

It's also important that students stay waiting quietly with their teachers until they have been dismissed to parents. Teachers cannot keep track of whether or not children have been picked up if they run and play at that time of day. We welcome you to stay and chat with others after you've picked up your child; however, we ask that children be allowed to play only on the east side of the stenciled play area where the benches and rocks are, so there is a clear division between who is being supervised by parents and for whom the teaching staff is still responsible. If it is raining hard, we will ask you to come inside.

Thanks for all you do to support the school,

Frau Annika Fjelstad

Missing Student Forms

Teachers are sending home packets of forms missing from student files. Look for them in backpacks in the next few days. Please fill them out and return them as soon as possible so that your students' files can be complete. Thanks!

Scrip is Back

It's time once again to start up the TCGIS Scrip program. Scrip is an easy way to funnel dollars toward TCGIS while making day-to-day purchases.

Families purchase gift cards for their favorite retailers, and those retailers
then donate back a percentage of the sale to TCGIS. Available retailers
include gas stations, grocery stores, drug stores, home improvement,
electronics, booksellers, restaurants, and many more.

Check out www.shopwithscrip.com for a complete retailer listing.

You may set up an account to order online. Instructions are available here. After you place your order, you will need to turn in the summary page along with your check (made out to TCGIS) to the office. This has been an easy way for the school to make over $1,000 per year. Check it out & put your everyday shopping dollars to work for the school! Orders will be due on the first Tuesday of each month (first order due October 5), for delivery the following Wednesday.  Feel free to contact our Scrip Coordinator, Deb Helmel, at debh@siewertcabinet.com with any questions.
Request for Art Supplies

Please start saving your empty cereal boxes, round cheese boxes and round oatmeal boxes. The K-3rd grade students will be making lanterns in art class for Martinstag in early November. Please bring boxes up to the art/science room on the second floor or have your child bring them to art class. Thank you!

Saskia Beck's Creative Dance Class

It's your last chance to enroll in Saskia Beck's After School Creative Dance Class! Sign up by Friday, September 24!

From Saskia:

The creative dance class will enable your child to experiment with their own body to different kinds of music. They will get to know several ideas and impulses to move their body creatively with help of the instructor and other children in the class. We will dance together, but we will also make space for individuals to develop their own movements. The aim of this class is that children learn to move to music, developing their own movements which won't be only hopping around.
Lunch Update from Gwendolyn Stangel

Medicine Update

If you would like the school to be responsible for administering medicine (even cough drops!) to your child during the school day, BOTH an action plan AND doctor orders are required. This is a school nursing best practice, and is required of all medications, whether over-the-counter or prescribed EVERY YEAR. If your child has medicine at the school, and you have not filled out a new action plan or medication authorization form for the 2010-2011 school year, please do so as soon as possible.

Allergy Action Plan

Asthma Action Plan

Medication Authorization Form

Remember, the office is only able to administer medicine approved by BOTH you and your doctor IN ADVANCE. We are also able to give children ice packs and band aids.

If you know your child suffers from nosebleeds, please note that in compliance with OSHA standards, office staff cannot send the child back to class with blood on his/her clothes. Please make sure to have a spare set of clothing in your child's locker.
Elternbrief Submissions

Please have all articles pertinent to the TCGIS community submitted to the Elternbrief by Monday at 9 am prior to Wednesday publication. Submissions may be sent to info@tcgis.org.
