Elternbrief September 15, 2010
Dear Families,

Thanks for the good turnout for Curriculum Night yesterday.

If you've been at school, you may have noticed a lot more color on our new flat surface of pavers. Members of the Playground Committee have been hard at work using stencils to paint game outlines onto the ground. It was a pleasure to look out the window today and see kids of all ages quite oblivious to the looming rainclouds, engaging in whole new ways with each other, thanks to a few painted game boards.

We want to do a proper celebration of the effort and work that this gift is by doing a proper "ribbon cutting" even though we did unofficially cut the ribbons today. We're going to organize an all school recess event with a few celebratory speeches and games on Tuesday, September 21 at 10:20. We'd love to have you join us.

Another committee I'd like to acknowledge for their hard work is the Amity Committee. Many people mention that one of their main attractions to our school is the double staffing we're able to provide in our classrooms due to the presence of Amity interns from Germany. These young people transform our school, but they don't just appear miraculously. It's the collaborative effort by a lot of people to recruit interns, find host homes and coordinate the logistics of 12 young people arriving and getting settled into a new country and new homes. The Amity committee consists of Mary-Fred Bausman-Watkins, Nicole Grenz, Darcy Rindelaub, Kate Wagner and Andrea Zibble. Next time you get that warm fuzzy feeling about how great it is to have an Amity intern in your child's room, find a way to let these hard-working folks know you appreciate what they do behind the scenes.

Please let me know any questions and concerns you may have. My door is open.

Thanks,
Frau Annika Fjelstad

Medicine Update

If you would like the school to be responsible for administering medicine to your child during the school day, BOTH an action plan AND doctor orders are required. This is a school nursing best practice, and is required of all medications, whether over-the-counter or prescribed EVERY YEAR. If your child has medicine at the school, and you have not filled out a new action plan or medication authorization form for the 2010-2011 school year, please do so as soon as possible.

Allergy Action Plan

Asthma Action Plan

Medication Authorization Form

Remember, the office is only able to administer medicine approved by BOTH you and your doctor IN ADVANCE. W are also able to give children ice packs and band aids.

If you know your child suffers from nosebleeds, please note that in compliance with OSHA standards, office staff cannot send the child back to class with blood on his/her clothes. Please make sure to have a spare set of clothing in your child's locker.

Sport Update

Hello TCGIS community,

My name is Mandi Rosenthal and I am the new Sport teacher. Having most recently taught in southwest Florida where PE teachers are referred to as "Coach", students know me as Coach Rosenthal!  For the first half of the year, I am lucky enough to have a full-time amity intern, Philipp Meud, who will be assisting with activities and providing spoken German language to our students.

Facilities  We are extremely fortunate this year to have the YMCA as our gymnasium space for all classes grades 1-6, with opportunities to use additional spaces including the fitness center, indoor track, and exercise studio for supplemental health and fitness activities. Kindergarten utilizes an expanded basement space and our large outdoor area.

Schedule  Kindergarten classes have Sport 2x per week for 30 minutes and grades 1-6 have sport 2x per week for 50 minutes

Units to be Covered  The following is a brief overview of units and skills to be covered this year
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Floor Hockey
  • Handball
  • Volleyball
  • Badminton
  • Football
  • Baseball/Softball
  • Invasion Games
  • Presidential Fitness Testing
  • Locomotor skills
  • Kicking/throwing/catching
  • Fitness Concepts (strength, endurance, balance, agility)
  • Health Concepts (anatomy, nutrition, making healthy choices)
Expert Parents  Do you have an area of expertise that you would like to share with our students? Would you like to referee a game for a class period or run around with 24 six-year olds???? I would gladly welcome the talents and knowledge of members of the TCGIS community! E-mail me at mrosenthal@germanschool-mn.org.

Your Old Sports Equipment Families, if you have any sports equipment around the house that you might be thinking of donating, please think of us. Anything that you have would be much appreciated, especially Frisbees and small footballs (great for our upcoming units)!

I am looking forward to a fantastic year of getting to know your children and providing a Sport experience where students can experience success, FUN, and an appreciation of being physically active.

Thank you,
Mandi Rosenthal
