Greetings!

Goodnight, Irene - and good riddance! Power outages have come and gone for most of us, the beach that moved over the road was returned by front end loader (see picture to the left), and the weather has been glorious.

Nadine kayaking

Me kayaking on the pond

I had a couple of sweet real estate

experiences this week. The first one was Tuesday evening; I was out in my little red kayak, paddling around the pond. Some people on their deck called out to me, asking if I had power yet. At the end of this little exchange, I introduced myself and told them that I was the realtor who had sold the house next door to them. They were tickled to thank me in person because they love their new neighbors. Just a little "good job" moment...

The other really sweet day was yesterday, which I spent showing homes to a client who bought and sold with me 30 years ago and has remained a close friend ever since. She and her husband are getting ready to make a lifestyle change and move out of that home, so we're exploring the options. It was really great to work again with someone I'd worked with so long ago and find that we both still enjoy and value our professional relationship.

We started our tour at The Pinehills in Plymouth. My friends are golfers, and there are two championship public courses in The Pinehills and one abutting private course. In addition, there's indoor and outdoor tennis and swimming, kayaking, shopping, and a wide range of interest group activities. The variety of new homes just about guarantees that there's something for everyone.

Bungalows and Cottages -
The Pinehills

What caught my eye yesterday were the new bungalow and cottage homes being built. This is a new type of home for The Pinehills, and a design that is experiencing a lot of interest nationally. It is probably partly because of the economy and partly because of a trend toward having enough space but not too much. McMansions are on the way out; bungalows are on the way in.

How do you define a cottage or a bungalow? In my mind, they're small, simple, and charming, often in the woods or at the beach. They remind us of happy childhood memories, whether they existed in actuality or just in storybooks. They're romantic.

The cottages and bungalows at The Pinehills may be smaller and less expensive than some of their other homes, but they're not small and they're not inexpensive. The least square footage is around 1,500 on two floors, in a very exposed setting (kind of like the campground at Oak Bluffs), starting in the $400,000's. Their other cottages start at 2,000 sq.ft. and the low $600,000's. In my mind, these are "cottages" in style only. But they're very appealing, and here is a sample (see left sidebar for more):

The bungalows and cottages in Falmouth are an entirely different story. Except for the first one, all of the homes listed below are under $300,000, and in my mind, are more truly cottages and bungalows than those at The Pinehills. They're unique, the majority are older, and they each have some intrinsic charm. They're a lovely opportunity to have that sweet place on the Cape for not a lot of money. Take a look!

52 Glendon Road

$409,000

52 Glenden Road

This home is the most expensive in this group because of its Woods Hole location and the 1,742 interior sq.ft. Very charming!

24 Suncrest Drive

$239,900

24 Suncrest Drive

Wow, a three-bedroom, two-bath home with 1,242 interior sq.ft. on a nice side street with association beach and boating. And in great condition. For only $239,900!! This is a chance to buy the dream.

37 Deep Pond Road

$240,000

37 Deep Pond Road

Oh boy! Direct waterfront and abutting conservation land so you have the benefit of privacy and additional land that you're not paying taxes on. Three bedrooms, one bath, 1,296 sq.ft. Needs work, but at this price, so what?!

#21103355

333 Boxberry Hill Road, Unit 3

$249,900

333 Boxberry Hill Road, Unit 3

Who's been eating my porridge?! In addition to being way cute, this free-standing condo is practically on Coonamessett Pond with its crystal-clear swimming and kayaking. There are also walking trails nearby and golf next door. With two bedrooms, one bath, and 936 sq.ft., it's practically perfect - especially at this price.

#21105717

19 Harborview Drive

$250,000

19 Harborview

Another appealing cottage with an association beach and dock. Needs no particular work, although some judicious refreshing would make it pop. Two bedrooms, one bath, 960 sq.ft. An attractive choice at a great price.

#21106944

31 Chestnut Street

$279,000

31 Chestnut Street

Marvelous Maravista! Cute house in great shape near downtown and Bristol Beach, this three-bedroom, one-bath, 864 sq.ft. house has additional space in the walk-out basement. Perfect for Mama Bear, Papa Bear, and Baby Bear - and all the cousins.

#21103650

76 Silver Beach Avenue

$289,900

76 Silver Beach Road

This is not that cute yet, but it could be. What it is is at New Silver Beach, and in pretty good shape. And at a really good price for this location. With four bedrooms, two baths, and 1,052 sq.ft., the space is just right for the proverbial cottage.

 Finish line

I did it! And not too terribly... I finished in one hour and 29 minutes, not the next day as I feared. In my age and gender category, I was 13th out of 20. And although 10,000 or so people finished ahead of me, 2,000 or so came in behind me. Since the last time I ran 7 miles was 1983, I was really happy just to finish.

There were moments of torture (like the first couple of miles through the hills and dense woods where there was no breeze), and moments of exhilaration (coming around the bend with Nobska and a sea of runners in front of me; and coming down the hill to the finish line with cheerleaders, an enormous flag, and triumphant music).

I saw people I haven't seen for years, like a co-worker and my daughter's high school friend, and I made some new friends, like the guy from California who's the Kashi spokesman. In the photo of me at the finish line, I look ridiculously happy. Just puttin' one foot in front of the other...kinda like life.

Still summer - let's make the most of it!
