Aloha Pet Ohana,

A new year can bring about a fresh new start! At Poi Dogs and Popoki we are looking forward to an array of new projects that will enable owners to keep their pets in a safe environment, keep the pet population under control through sterilization clinics, and continue fighting for the protection of Hawaii's pets through the State legislature.

As our newly elected Senators and Representatives head into a new legislative session, we are especially proud to have Representative Blake Oshiro be a part of our Board of Directors. Blake was recently recognized as the number one person to make a difference in Hawaii! Read on to find out about the hero in our midst.

And don't forget! If you made that New Year's resolution to be an active volunteer in the community this year, then you still have a chance to stick with your commitment! Join PDP as a volunteer where you can make life changing impacts for hundreds of pets in need. E-mail alicia@poidogsandpopoki.org to find out how you can help.

Mahalo for your continued support. It is through your generosity of donations and time, that we're able to reach out to so many pets and families. We hope you are touched by the story of the Honu family below who need your help now more than ever.

Stop by our Facebook page to show your support and we look forward to seeing you at future events!

Fencing Repair Needed to Keep Family Pets Safe

Moka

The Honu ohana was lucky to find an affordable rental in East Honolulu that would accept pets. But unbeknownst to them, one of their dogs managed to get out through a puka in the backyard fence and was hit and killed on Kalanianaole Hwy. The driver refused to stop and left the dog lying in the middle of the highway - bleeding and dying - until a good samaritan stopped to offer assistance. Unfortunately, it was too late for Moka. This is an especially sad story because Moka, a pit mix, was very close to the family's special needs daughter, providing her with comfort, protection and unconditional love. The family now needs to keep their other three dogs safe, but the fence is falling apart and their landlord is unable to repair it. The property manager has given the family permission to fix it themselves but they lack the funds for the materials. If PDP can pay for the fencing materials, the family has agreed to help with the labor and repair. We estimate that this project will cost approximately $500 to properly enclose the backyard.

To help fund the fence repair and keep the Honu family pets safe, please email alicia@poidodgsandpopoki.org.

Photos of the fence backyard fence show how it is barely being held together and is in much need of repair to help protect the Honu family pets.

PDP Board Member Blake Oshiro Honored As No. 1 Person to Make a Difference!

Representative Blake Oshiro, who serves on the PDP Board of Directors, was recently recognized as the number one person to make a difference as part of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser's 10 Who Made a Difference series. Winners were chosen by Star-Advertiser editors from nominations submitted by staff members and readers. Oshiro was recognized for his work in fighting for equality in the state of Hawaii by reviving the House Bill 444, a proposal to grant all couples the right to enter a civil union, that would provide all of the rights, benefits and protections of marriage. We are honored to have such a strong and respected leader serve on our board and who continues to fight for the rights of Hawaii's pets.
