Aloha Pet Ohana, We hope you had a wonderful Christmas with friends, family and your pets! This Christmas, PDP held a successful sterilization clinic for cats and dogs. Read on the rest of the newsletter to find out how our clinic went!
Did you know that New Year's Eve is the busiest day of the year for Oahu's animal control contractor - the Hawaiian Humane Society? They take in more lost pets on New Year's Eve than any other day of the year. Not only do families need to be concerned about the impact of fireworks on their pets, but neighbors and communities should keep an eye out for those pets that get loose during New Year's celebrations. The best thing that you can do for your pet is bring them indoors for the evening until the chaos of the night settles down. Here's an informative Web page on how you can help keep your pets safe during New Year's Eve and from fireworks.
If you're making a new year's resolution for 2011 to volunteer your time, then we invite to join PDP and personally help save hundreds of animals. E-mail alicia@poidogsandpopoki.org to find out how you can help.
From our pet family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy new year.

Poi Dogs & Popoki Sterilization Clinic
PDP hosted a cat and dog sterilization clinic just days before Christmas. More than 30 cats were trapped and sterilized on a property in Kalihi where a very frail and elderly, but compassionate woman has been feeding feral cats for over 20 years. Now in her 80s, Rachel has difficulty walking but she has managed to continue feeding. The number of cats has continued to grow because she lacked the resources and knowledge of how to manage the colony utilizing Trap-Neuter-Return. Mahalo to PDP volunteers and other cat colony caregivers who assisted Rachel with trapping and transporting the cats to Ewa Beach. With funding, PDP will return to clean up the property, remove the excessive debris and rubbish, and provide Rachel with a better environment in which to not only care for her cats, but one that will reduce her financial burden.
For more information on how you can help, please email alicia@poidodgsandpopoki.org.
