Responding to a Call from the Earth

Each newsletter features a reflection from a different Alliance member. This month's contributor is Victor Ibarra. Victor has been engaging in earth honoring traditions since 2005. He is a Burning Man attendee of 7 years, a flow artist, amateur photographer, and fire dancer. He is also a tech specialist and co-leader with the Voices of the Earth Project. Victor strives to engage in practices that enable full openness, expression, and love.

 Victor Ibarra

About five years ago, I began a journey of participating in earth honoring traditions with the hope to do what I could to help preserve old ways of life and to share my experiences with those that are drawn to these very special ways. Three years into my journey, I was guided to take big step forward to start a search for my purpose on my earth walk. Through this experience, I heard a call to focus my energy on things that served my highest self and community, to focus on tuning into and hearing my inner voice, and to hear the messages being sent to me from the Earth and all of her inhabitants. When the opportunity to volunteer for the Voices of the Earth project came my way, a feeling of elation consumed my body. The Universe was speaking; I said yes.

Voices of the Earth is a project that features conversations with elders and community leaders of all faiths and traditions, who share their wisdom on spirit, practice, and honoring the earth. The core of the volunteer group, which includes Elaine Gast Fawcett, Daniel Foor, and me, started this project in 2010 based on a vision Daniel Foor had around interviewing elders and community leaders and making these recording available for free download as part of an online archive. The beginning of this project had its challenges as we started with little knowledge around producing video interviews. After a few months of meetings, planning and researching, we produced and released our first video interview in November 2010. Through this process of putting this dream into practice, we have learned many lessons and are on the road to producing the highest quality interviews possible.

As of today, we have produced four video interviews with two more soon-to-be-released. Each of these interviews has drawn me closer to this project. The one thing I'm most proud of is that we are getting the opportunity to meet and connect with people that practice earth honoring traditions. This has enabled me to see different, yet similar, ways and has opened me up even more to the many beautiful things I had not yet acknowledged.

I truly believe we all have a purpose here on this earth walk. For those that have found their purpose, awesome! For those just starting the search, have full faith that your purpose will present itself when the time is right. I feel the Voices of the Earth project is part of my life purpose and I am truly grateful to be part of this project. Please support us and view our webpage to see the interviews we have produced to date and to see what volunteer opportunities we have. Thank you.
