Greetings!
At our recent Where's The Money symposium on trends in arts funding, we brought in Kim Klein of Nonprofits Talking Taxes. She was the big hit of the day and of our entire SMAC. OPEN DAILY week. She came to encourage nonprofits to start talking about taxes, and she framed her talk with stats about the financial strength and importance of the nonprofit sector. Besides being a great presenter, she made the case for the need for conversations of the scary topic of taxes in our state. Her plea is for the citizens of California to engage in conversations on the issue, rather than avoidance. She offered some ideas but reiterated that these ideas were a starting point and many more ideas could be considered. We hope to bring her back some time for a larger forum with more diverse points of view.
You can read the Sac Bee article here and see her PowerPoint here. Over the next few years, we hope to host more bipartisan conversations to learn about "what do you think about taxes?"
Also, one of our most valuable re-granting programs is now open! Find out more about Microgrants here.
Warm regards,
Rhyena Halpern, Executive Director Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission P.S. The SMAC office will be closed on Monday, March 26th. Keep an eye out for our newsletter on Tuesday, March 27th. |
