| SMAC Update | October 17, 2011 |

Greetings!
October is a month of exciting arts and cultural activities. It is also recognized as a month dedicated to other values important to our society, namely the Arts & Humanities.
The National Endowment for the Arts wishes to share with you this proclamation and recognition of Arts & Humanities Month by President Barack Obama. You can read the proclamation here.
Sacramento is also celebrating Arts & Humanities Month. I was honored to participate in a collaboration that celebrated the book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Sacramento City Councilmember Darrell Fong is supporting local arts organizations this month by organizing a fundraiser at Ella's. I hope you are out and around enjoying the Artober festivities! Be sure to check Sacramento365.com's listings for Artober events!
I also want to share with you some results from last Friday's Prelude to the Season. We are honored to have received recognition in two categories. See details below.
Warm regards,
Rhyena Halpern, Executive Director Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission |

Arts & Humanities Month We're celebrating in Sacramento
The Sacramento Public Library system, Sacramento Bee, and Access Sacramento have partnered this month on a great program about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book was read and recorded by community leaders--including a few arts leaders, including SMAC's Executive Director, Rhyena Halpern--who each read a chapter. It is an exciting collaboration and project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. |

 Support Local Arts Orgs
Fundraiser at Ella's on Oct. 23rd
What do our Council Members Darrell Fong, Rob Fong, Steve Cohn, Sandy Sheedy, Angelique Ashby, Kevin McCarty, Bonnie Pannell, and Jay Schenirer, as well as Supervisors Don Nottoli, Roberta MacGlashan, and Phil Serna have in common?
In a show of solidarity and support for SMAC and the local arts scene, our elected officials will be serving dinner to guests at Ella's, compliments of Chef Selland, on Oct. 23rd, in an effort to raise money to offset cuts to our Cultural Arts Award fund. This fund supports regranting to our local nonprofit arts organizations. It is truly going to be quite the evening! Inspired by Councilmember Darrell Fong, please find full details here.
