Keep the Arts Alive
SMAC UpdateAugust 8, 2011

Greetings!

Building on last week's theme about the fight at the state level to preserve public funding for the arts, please find a story of victory here. South Carolina voted overwhelmingly to reverse its governor's attempt to completely eliminate state dollars for the arts.

I was especially heartened by Newberry Opera House executive director Deborah B. Smith's comment "South Carolina...being politically conservative doesn't preclude a love of the arts and a willingness to back that with taxpayer funds. It was an inspiring turn of events."

It is encouraging to hear of South Carolina's success, and we look forward to many more victories at the state and local levels to come.

Warm regards,

Rhyena Halpern, Executive Director
