Greetings!
Americans for the Arts (AFTA) released its second annual National Arts Index scores this week and the findings show that the arts follow the nation's business cycle of decline. But while the flagging economy has presented a number of challenges for the arts, the Index does hit some high notes:
- Americans are seeking more personal engagement in the arts: Personal arts creation and volunteerism is growing (personal artistic activity increased 5% from 2005 to 2009 and volunteering jumped 11.6%).
- The number of artists in the workforce has increased:
17 % from 1996 to 2009 (1.9 to 2.2 million). - Demand for Arts Education is up: There are more college-bound seniors with 4 years of arts or music and in the past decade college arts degrees conferred annually have risen from 75,000 to 127,000.
I encourage you to read Edward Ortiz's summary in the Sacramento Bee and to download a PDF of the complete report.
Regards, Rhyena Halpern, Executive Director
Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission

Loss of an Iconic Artist

We regret to share with you that renowned artist Dennis Oppenheim died of liver cancer on Saturday at the age of 72. He was a pioneer of land art, conceptual art, performance art, and video in the 1960s and 1970s. Dennis is known in Sacramento for his iconic public artwork at the Sacramento International Airport, 11 sculptures of giant birds that appear to be flying through the air.
