SMAC Update | January 24, 2011 |
Greetings!
Last week I wrote about SMAC's ability to maintain a high level of neutrality in our re-granting programs due to our open and accountable processes and our commitment to inclusiveness. This week I would like to address the issue of balance and neutrality.
SMAC staff works to protect the public process so that it truly is public, and so that no singular interest overpowers others. We also protect the artist and the art design, and in some cases, the laws that protect the art.
Our staff protects the integrity of the art selection and approval process, while doing everything possible to support the arts applicant. SMAC staff strives to make sure that all constituents of a public art site are given a voice on a panel and that all arts disciplines are represented by experts in the field for grant panels. The panelists--arts experts and community members, not SMAC staff--score the applications.
We are always seeking to balance public interest and the arts, while serving all parties.
Regards, Rhyena Halpern, Executive Director
Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission
