Interior Design "Defined"
A newsletter that keeps you informed of current trends in Interior Design and related fields. |
As we close up our houses in preparation for the winter, it is a great time to clean out, reorganize, and shift things such as furniture and accessories to create a different look for your rooms. Dig out those fall decorations from the attic or basement and get geared up for the holiday season. Above all, enjoy the changes both inside and outside! |
Out with the cold, in with the new--window treatments
Living in an old house myself, I know first hand how much cold air can blow in around windows and how cold the glass gets. Even with newer windows, it can still be uncomfortable to sit near windows in the winter months. Window treatments are a simple solution. Lined drapery panels that can be drawn together can keep you and your home warmer and can completely change the atmosphere in a room. Flat Roman shades would cover the window glass and can be mounted inside or outside the window frame. After choosing a fabric, these window treatments can be fabricated in our workroom within a few weeks, just in time for the holiday season and the cold weather. Another option is energy saving Duette shades that Abbott Interiors can order quickly direct from Hunter Douglas. |
Getting Creative...
Do you have a favorite piece of artwork hanging on a bathroom wall or display framed family photographs on the wall in your kitchen? Try something really creative. Maybe you collect menus from your favorite restaurants from around the country or even the world. Put them where you can see them everyday day and enjoy the memories. There are many different frame and shadow boxes available to create your own art. You could also display photographs of flowers or old maps to create a new look in a room. You never know what you might find going through some old things you've put away. Something really different would make a great conversation piece the next time you have company.

Striving for Perfection
" Nothing in life is perfect you know," says Min Hogg, founder and former editor in chief of The World of Interiors. She belives in stylish rooms filled with endearing mistakes, sleight-of-hand solutions and camouflage decorating. As advice for our daily lives it means that the colors you choose do not have to match, but can blend, complement and uplift. The little challenges in a room can have unusual solutions that are unique to you and your family and don't always have to "follow the rules". Colors, room arrangements, use of tables, benches and ottomans, unintended uses for cabinets and shelves bring a very personal decorating style to your home.

Going, going.......green
Dim the Lights Please!
The small ways that we can conserve energy really do add up. Dimming your lights is a great way to save! I originally thought that this would put more wear and tear on your lightbulbs, but it actually prolongs the lightbulbs life. It is very simple to put a dimmer on a toggle light switch. Keeping your lights low, especially on overhead lights that are needed at full capacity, can make a big difference. Dimming 10% saves 10% electricity and makes the bulb last twice as long. Dimming 50% saves 40% electricity and makes those same bulbs last 20 times longer!
