Interior Design "Defined"
A newsletter that keeps you informed of current trends in Interior Design and related fields. |
Notes of interest, both technical and creative, pass over my desk on a daily basis. Many will be of great interest to you, therefore I would like to share them. This is the first of monthly newsletters covering topics ranging from regulations, trends and new products to "going green". |
Color
At this moment a return of an old favorite - blue - in all its tones and values. A number of showrooms in the Boston Design Center are featuring the bright navys with white or the mid range blues with color accents. A terrific group of rooms done in the blue colorway were seen in House Beautiful the March issue. Blues in powder, denim, sky, teal, midnight, cerulean, navy, turquoise, cornflower, periwinkle, royal and opal cover a huge range of possibilities to blend and mix in a room. Perhaps adding to a room that already has some blue in it by changing accessories, painting a wall or adding a slipcover to intensify and punch up what is there. (Paint suggestions can be seen on Abbott Interiors Facebook page) |
Fabulous New Wallpaper
Farrow & Ball, the English company which has an expansive color palette from the great homes of England, also has a large line of wallpapers and has come out with a new line of papers called the Chelsea collection. There are twenty-two colors in three patterns: Wisteria, a delicate trailing design of blossoming wisteria, Petal Stripe, and Peony, based on the ornamental peony flower. The colors are delicious and very much in the New England tradition. Samples are available and can be seen at Farrow & Ball at the Boston Design Center.Farrow & Ball |
New Rules For Renovations
Doing any work on your house that is older than 1978? New EPA regulations on safe work practices for lead paint require any company doing home improvement must have a certified person trained by the EPA on their staff. This also means that your electrician, plumber, HVAC, painters, and most other tradesman doing work on your home must also be certified. This protects homeowners from the risk of exposure to harmful lead dust and particles created by sanding, drilling and demolition. This regulation went into affect in April, 2010 and carries very heavy fines. HOWEVER, if you do the work yourself this regulation does not apply. Check with your trades people to make sure that they have been certified. |
Going, going, going.......green
The light bulb as you know it is being phased out. Within the next few years the lighting industry's new technologies, currently in developmental stages, will be replacing the standard light bulb. The present schedule looks like this: the 100 watt bulb must be replaced by manufacturers by 1/1/2012, the 75 watt bulb by 1/1/2013 and the 60 and 40 watt by 1/1/2014. Many of the other lights such as your recessed bulbs can now be changed to LED lights as the present bulbs are also being eliminated. Expect to pay considerably more for your bulbs as they last up to 50,000 hours. At this time, use compact fluorescents in as many lamps as possible as we wait for the longer life LED bulbs to appear on the market.
