Zoee's Life Saved! Esophageal Foreign Body
By: Dr. Susan Wootten
Early one morning, Zoee, a beloved 4 ½ year old Yorkie arrived as an emergency here at Animal Hospital of North Asheville. Her human mom was concerned that Zoee had possibly swallowed a large piece of a rawhide chew because she was gagging and making attempts to vomit. After immediately assessing her and finding that she was reasonably comfortable and was stable, I ordered radiographs (x-rays) to determine if the rawhide chew was indeed lodged in her esophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach). The radiographs taken of Zoee's chest and abdomen showed that the part of the esophagus that passes through her chest cavity was dilated with air. Just over the heart, there was an elongated mass that we suspected was the stuck rawhide - to read what happened to Zoee, Click Here.

Our Pharmacy Team
To work in the pharmacy at Animal Hospital of North Asheville, you must love attention to detail as Nan and Sharon do. Both Nan and Sharon are Registered Veterinary Technicians who carefully fill the prescriptions at Animal Hospital of North Asheville. Nan works in the pharmacy 4 days a week, and Sharon steps away from her surgery duties 1 day a week to work in the pharmacy as well. "I enjoy completing projects," said Nan, "and that's what I do all day long. Working in the pharmacy, I complete mini-projects all day long. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment." Attention to detail is very important when dealing with potentially life-saving - to read more, Click Here.

Is Your Home Cat Friendly?
At Animal Hospital of North Asheville, we are always striving to make our practice as cat friendly as possible. We want your cat's experience here to be stress-free and enjoyable, so we put a lot of thought into how to best serve our feline friends. (For more on creating a stress-free veterinarian visit, Click Here.) Many cat owners choose their veterinarian hospital based on whether or not they feel the hospital is cat friendly or not; it is a very important element of a good pet medical practice. But did you know that your own home may not be cat friendly?!? Or that it might be your behavior that is causing your cat to act out in a negative way? Click on any of the links below for amazing resources on how to best create the ideal home for your cats, as well as very helpful information on deciphering cat behavior. Testimonial: The Best Vet / Hospital in Asheville
We were in Asheville last week - early March! We took both Maddy and Busby to a dog park - which I've done numerous times before.
Two days later, I noticed she was holding up her rear hind leg. Lameness -I've now since learned is the classic first symptom of Lyme disease in dogs. Anyway, I thought she had hurt her foot, and so looked for something in her pad. Nothing.
Six hours later, she had trouble going down the stairs.
Now, I was getting concerned. But she had 'shifted legs' in terms of the lameness. Another classic sign.
In bed, that night, she cuddled so tightly to me that I knew something was wrong. She seemed so depressed - DEFINITELY not my Maddy. Again, another classic sign. When I woke the following morning, with her on my chest, and tried to stand her on the bed, she couldn't support herself and collapsed.
ZOOM! Called the best vet/hospital in Asheville and we were seen within the hour. We were blessed to have found one of the best veterinarian clinics in the region and a vet who Paul and I think walks on water, Dr. Susan Wootten.
