2010 Newsletter
Dear  and family,

We would like to share with you another example of how incredibly loving our amazing staff members and clients are. Cindy, who is Dr. Plankenhorn's Exam Room Tech, brought us the idea of helping the pets of Asheville's homeless people through the Project Connect 2010 event. Project Connect is an annual one day event that is held in conjunction with the VA Stand Down. The aim of Project Connect is to provide onsite barrier-free services to the homeless population of Asheville-Buncombe while facilitating community awareness and participation. Although Project connect had tried to help the pets of the homeless in past years, there had never been veterinary services available, so Animal Hospital of North Asheville decided to try and help.

Cindy organized the plan - to read more

You don't have to be nervous or afraid to trim your pet's nails. You can learn to trim them without stressing your pet; all it takes is a little patience and training. Sometimes the training takes just minutes and other times you may need to practice for weeks with twice daily sessions - it depends on your pet.

It is essential that your pet's nails are trimmed on a regular basis. Some potential problems if left untrimmed: CLICK HERE to learn more.
Sad to Say Goodbye
Picture of tree

With great regret, we announce the loss of our grand old silver maple. This wonderful tree presided over Beaverdam Road for an estimated 150 years, providing shade and habitat for many.

In 1998, when we expanded the Animal Hospital, even though we were advised that the tree was very old and perhaps nearing life's end, we wanted to preserve this majestic tree. In order to give the tree its best chance for survival, we sought advice from Quality Forward and from other arborists on how to care for it. We hoped that the recommended infusions, aerating of the soil, feedings, and watering would give our tree - to read more CLICK HERE.
Congratulations Asheville Humane Society!
Humane Society grand opening
Asheville Humane Society and Buncombe County Government held the grand opening of the new Animal Care Campus, located at 14 & 16 Forever Friend Lane, on Tuesday, September 14. The Animal Care Campus is over 33,000 square feet and consists of two buildings housing the Buncombe County Animal Shelter, Buncombe County Animal Control, A-B Tech Veterinary Medical Technology Program and the Asheville Humane Society Adoption & Education Center. Buncombe County Government and the City of Asheville Government contract with AHS to operate the Animal Shelter. AHS fundraised $3.3 million to construct the Adoption & Education Center with private funds.

We are proud that our own Drs. David and Betsy Thompson served on the steering committee during the capital campaign for the Adoption and Education Center. In addition, five of our veterinarians and one staff member were major donors! Dr. Betsy serves on the board for Asheville Humane Society and has served as vice chair and secretary.

Pet Spotlight - Spooner

Spooner in a field
Our family is involved in a lot of charitable work and believe strongly in giving back to our community & environment, so we try whenever possible to incorporate that into Spooner's life as well. He has so much love to offer and has such a gentle sweet nature that it was only fitting to have him visit with young children at school and those still young at heart, just living with a little assistance in a group setting. The whole world is the apple of his eye! We were encouraged to participate in Paws for a Cause last year - a charity dog walk tSpooner and ruffo help raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer as we have had several family members who lost their fight to cancer. Spooner rose to the occasion and sent out newsletters to all his friends, which resulted in him raising over $1200.00! He completed the walk just as he was recovering from his 1st knee surgery! We also have worked to raise money locally for Animal Compassion Network, hoping our contributions would enable families going through hard financial times to keep their pets.

By embracing new knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, our mission at AHNA is to provide the highest level of medical, dental and surgical care possible; to deliver it with integrity and compassion for our clients, but most importantly, to constantly see ourselves through the eyes of our voiceless patients who understand only that we are gentle and kind; to have as our first priority, relief of their pain and discomfort and to strive to minimize separation from the people they love.
