3 Ways Rapid Prototyping Saves Time and Money
A rapid prototype is a full-scale functional form of a new product. There are many ways to make prototypes but this article will focus on Stereolithography (SLA) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). Both technologies can make prototypes in hours if a 3-D model is available. If a 3-D model isn't available, it isn't difficult to produce one from a dimensioned drawing. Making prototypes of a product before final design and production saves time and money. Here are just 3 ways rapid prototypes save time and money:
1) Prototypes can be used to confirm the products fit and function. Many design issues are identified and corrected during this stage. Having a functional part allows deeper understanding and enhances innovation. 2) Prototypes can also be used for marketing and customer response. A product can be validated by end-users to ensure a positive market response before the final product is delivered. 3) Test many concepts quickly and inexpensively. Product development often involves many failures before the best product is finally produced. Rapid prototypes can be done in a matter of hours if 3-D model is a | | Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) |
Stereolithography is the most common form of rapid prototypes (SLA). Stereolithography is a layered manufacturing method that uses photo curable liquid resin in combination with an ultraviolet laser. When the laser passes over the curable resin, it hardens the surface of what will become a layer of the formed part. Each layer is formed in 0.002" to 0.004" steps until the part is complete. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is another rapid prototyping process that offers improved physical properties compared to stereolithography (SLA). Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) rapid prototypes are made in layers like SLA, but instead of a curable liquid, SLS uses powdered materials that are fused with a CO2 laser. A thin layer of powder is laid down and the CO2 laser draws on the powder, sintering the particles together. Layers are produced in 0.004" steps until the part is complete. Once the SLS part is complete, it will be a durable and functional part that can be finished and painted. Stereolithography (SLA) offers high accuracy and excellent finish, but has moderate strength. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is strong and offers a variety of materials to closely match production materials. Finish isn't as good as SLA, but SLS can be painted. | | Ask The Expert |
Question: My company is in the process of specifying a mold and don't know what class we should request?
Answer: There are 5 classes of molds for injection molds. They have quite detailed specifications but the result is an expected number cycles expected from the mold. Class 101 designation is for greater than one million cycles. 102 is not to exceed a million and Class 103 is under 500,000 cycles. Class 104 and Class 105 are under 100,000 cycles and under 500 cycles respectively. The higher the class, the more you can expect to pay for the mold.
Question: Does MDI machine plastic?
Answer: Yes MDI does machining of plastic in addition to injection molding and dip molding.
Question: Are you able to certify the materials that are used to make parts?
Answer: We provide specific material certification upon request. If we cannot meet a specification found on a part drawing, we notify the customer during the quoting process.
Question: Can plastisol be injection molded?
Answer: No, plastisol is a liquid and injection molding is done with dry pellets. There are pellets that thermoplastic resins that have similar properties to plastisol should your application call for it.
Question: I was told to specify primer on my parts to be dip coated but I don't know what it does? Answer: Plastisol by itself won't adhere to metal and requires priming if adhesion is desired. If it is important for the handle to not move during use you must specify priming.

What Our Customer's Are Saying ...
All of our Molded Devices Companies believe that there is no more important part of our business than our customers. We take great pride in not only satisfying the needs of our customer, but exceeding expectations whenever we can. Here are some recent comments our customers:
"Wow, our customer couldn't believe the improvement in part quality when we switched from a machined part to your injection molded part."
"Thank you and your team very much for your efforts. We really appreciate the effort and will send a driver today to get the parts."
"As you are aware, I have been working with our resin engineers on changing from a glass filled PEEK to an unfilled Peek used in a solenoid valve. We want to thank Southwest Mold for getting the unfilled parts to our dock so quickly. This is such a hot project for us and we were delighted Southwest Mold came through. You guys are great! "
"Congratulations, you were one of our suppliers who met our previous quarterly or 12 month goals of a 100% composite rating. This level of performance requires dedication and extra effort from your entire workforce."
"Wow, that is some Fast Customer Service !! Absolutely , Please ship out 1000 pcs today. "
"I'm concerned that if the coating is primed we'll have issues removing the coating from these counterbored ports (they currently have two pipe plugs in them). Otherwise... WOW."
"We just assembled it into the system. Please send our appreciation to everyone involved. Your company and people did an excellent job !!! "

What Plastisol?
Plastisol is a suspension of PVC particles in a plasticizer that flows as a liquid. It can be heated to cross link the plastic and plasticizer to form a plastic part. MDI designs and develops products and coating from Plastisol. The hardness of Plastisol is shore A5-thru shore D 60 with tensile strength of 1700 psi. It is abrasion resistant and self-extinguishing in fire. Temperature limits are less than -70°F (low temperature) or 430°F (high temperature). Resistant to most acids and alkaline materials, Plastisol has FDA and USDA approved formulations available.
