Too Hot To Handle No More with Dip Coating Application

Dip coating is done using  Plastisol,  a liquid form of vinyl that is cured by heat to form an end product. Typical applications for plastisol

include electrical connectors,  medical balloons, friction caps and sailboat mast boots to name a few . Plastisol can also be used for its insulative properties.  A large property manager located in the Southwest  discovered   brass handles installed on exterior doors  became too hot to handleafter being  heated by the  afternoon sun.  The property manager fixed the problem by dip coating the handles with Plastisol.  The brass handles can now be touched at any time of the day without risk of injury;  which was a big concern to this fortune 500 company.

Plastisols are very versatile, offering a multitude of applications & processing possibilities. They can offer a wide variety of physical properties & attributes depending on the formulation. Plastisol can be used as a coating or as a molded part. It can be formulated to resist chemicals, dielectric strength, fire resistance, abrasion resistance, and many other properties too numerous to mention. Applications include:

  • Plating Racks
  • Tool Handles
  • Wire Baskets
  •  Automotive Parts
  •  Glove Coating
  • Glass Bottles
  • Outdoor Furniture
  • Wire Forms
  •  Conduit
  • Clips
  • Clamps
  • Latches
  • Brackets
  • Levers
  • Chain
  • Hooks

Question: Can non-metal items be dip coated?

Answer: Items that can withstand temperatures of 350 degrees Fahrenheit would be possible to dip coat. It's recommended that a sample part first be dip coated to make sure the heat will not damage the part.
What is the cheapest plastic to use for my project?

Question: Does MDI machine plastic?

Answer: Yes MDI does machining of plastic in addition to injection molding and dip molding.

Question: Are you able to certify the materials that are used to make parts?

Answer: We provide specific material certification upon request. If we cannot meet a specification found on a part drawing, we notify the customer during the quoting process.

Question:  Why are Injection Molds so expensive?

Answer:
Expensive is a relative term, but one must consider the time it takes to build an injection mold which is measured in weeks or even months. Injection Molds are built by highly skilled mold builders who use expensive computer controlled machinery and handling equipment to manage injection molds that can get quite heavy.  Molds are built to extremely tight  tolerances that can be less than +/- 0.001" which require great precision and experienced mold builders to achieve.

Question:  I was told to specify primer on my parts to be dip coated but I don't know what it does?

Answer: Plastisol by itself won't adhere to metal and requires priming if adhesion is desired. If it is important for the handle to not move during use you must specify priming.

What Is Dip Molding?

Plastisol Dip Molding is a thermal process. A metal mold or mandrel is  preheated, dipped, and then post heated.   During the "cure", the plastisol fuses and forms a plastic part. Because plastisol is elastic,  parts can be stripped from molds. The part is the negative of the mold. Dip Molding is ideal for boots, caps, plugs, covers, grips, etc...
