Choosing The Right Plastic Design

The procedure for designing a product in plastic is the same for any other product.  The first step is to understand the environment and use of the product. The list belows outlines the critical questions that need to be addressed before beginning to design with plastic:

What are the end uses for the product ?
Can multiple parts be designed into one large part ?
What are the structural requirements ?
Are loads static, dynamic or cycling ?
What are the stress levels ?
Is the part subject to impact loads ?
What tolerances are required ?
What environment will the part see ?
What operating temperatures will it have ?
What is the expected life of the product ?
How will the product be assembled ?
What kind of finish is required on the parts ?
Any UL, DOT, MIL specs required ?

Once the above questions have been answered, the next step is to compare product data sheets for different resins to find the physical properties that satisfy the part with the least cost.  Evaluating at least 2-5 resins after the tool is built should be included by the molder to quality several resins for lowest cost and multiple sources of supply. This step alone could offer huge savings and flexibility for the life of the tool.

Question: What's the biggest part you can injection mold?

Answer: We can mold parts up to about 3 lbs with a projected area of about 200 square inches

Question:
Why is Dip Molding so much cheaper than Injection Molding?

Answer: The tooling cost for dip molding is only a fraction of the cost of injection molds. A complex Injection mold can takes months to build and requires  highly trained people using expensive equipment, and other special tools; a  complex Dip Mold can be built within weeks with a fraction of the labor.

Question:
Can you guarantee the service life of a dip molded part?

Answer:
Unfortunately every part is unique and will have a specific environment it will operate in. Our recommendation is to have prototypes made and test to your requirement.

Question:
Can I put my logo on the parts you produce?

Answer:
Logos or any artwork can be put on injection molded, dip molded and dip coated parts.

Question:
My injection molder went out of business, can you use my old mold to make parts?

Answer: In most cases we can use any mold as long as it is in working order was recently producing acceptable parts. In the worst case some modification may be required, but the cost is usually a fraction of making a new mold.
