Injection Molded Parts

Reducing costs of injection molded parts is not difficult if you keep basic design elements in mind. The cost of injection molding tooling and injection molded part costs can get costly  by including features and design elements that aren't worth the added costs. This article will discuss some of the design elements that can save you money in injection molding tooling and injection molded part costs.

Question: Why does injection moldable resins keep going up when crude oil rises?

Answer:Injection Moldable Resins or thermoplastic resin is made from petroleum feedstocks. You can expect resin prices to rise and fall with the price of crude oil. Less than 4% of crude production goes into feedstocks that makes plastic for injection molding. Gasoline and heating oil make up more than 70% of crude demand which can cause shortages of feedstocks to make resin for injection molding.

Question: Why are Injection Molds so expensive?

Answer: Expensive is a relative term, but one must consider the time it takes to build an injection mold which is measured in weeks or even months. Injection Molds are built by highly skilled mold builders who use expensive computer controlled machinery and handling equipment to manage injection molds that can get quite heavy.  Molds are built to extremely tight  tolerances that can be less than +/- 0.001" which require great precision and experienced mold builders to achieve.

Question: Are there any special considerations for moving my injection mold to another injection molder?

Answer: Custom Injection molds tend to be builit to a wide range of standards and configurations that might require modification to run at another molder.
As long as the mold is producing satisfactory parts, another molder should be able to step in and produce parts in short order. Select your new molder carefully and make sure they have a tool room that can deal with any configurations that might require modification on a different molding machine.

Question: Is there a product the I can use to dip coat parts myself?

Answer:
There is a retail product that can be purchased in cans from your local building supply store. These products use an air dry chemistry that lacks the durability of a commercial Plastisol Dip Coating Application. Small applications and residential use may lend itself to an air-dry "do it yourself" application, but for real duality and long life, its best to go with and industrial coating of Plastisol.

Question: Is your company capable of making medical balloons?

Answer:
MDI provides a line of esophageal medical balloons that are used in stethoscope with temperature applications. We use class VI medical material for all of our balloons. Our thin wall balloons are ideally suited to applications where superior acoustics are required to deliver enhanced heart rate and breath sounds as well as allowing core body temperature to be monitored. We provide a line of standard 9Fr, 12fr, 18Fr and 24Fr balloons as well as the ability to develop balloons to customer specifications.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Keep Injection Molding Costs Down When Crude Oil Prices Go Up

The correlation between  crude oil prices and the price of thermoplastic resin may seem obvious, but keeping prices in check may seem impossible.

Oil Rig

Petrochemicals that include injection moldable resins are made from crude oil which can make up 75% of the price of an injection molded part. If you think the price of crude is hard to understand because of exhchange rates, inventory, demand, political risk, terrorism and factors that go beyond the scope of this article. Petrochemicals are more difficult because they are the second derivative of crude oil. Petrochemicals only account for  4% of petroleum based products. This makes the market for petrochemicals less important than gasoline or heating oil, which accounts for 70% of oil production.
