Are you indispensable to your organization?
"The best way to predict the future... is to create it." Without a doubt, this is my favorite Peter Drucker quote. Each one of us is able to create the future that we want for ourselves, our families, and our organizations. It all starts with determining what we want and then developing the plan that allows us to realize that future.
Your Board of Directors wants you to lead! Planning is one of the key responsibilities of any board and they want you to guide them through a process that will ensure the success of the organization. Begin now to establish a planning process that will make certain that 2011 is the best year ever!
In 2010, I had the privilege of facilitating 28 Board planning retreats. I also worked with eight organizations in developing three year strategic plans. Six of the organizations were chambers of commerce, one was an association, and one was a public utility commission. Of the six chambers, four were 5-Star accredited through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and one was 4-Star accredited. Those chamber executives understand that in order to remain a relevant organization, a meaningful plan must always be in place.
I also worked with one chamber whose board was frustrated by the lack of direction and leadership. They decided that it was time to start over with a true strategic direction and a new CEO. That chamber has already increased membership by over 25% and the operating budget by over 30%. Studies have demonstrated time and again that organizations that have a well thought-out plan accomplish more and are much more effective than those that do not plan. What are you waiting for?
A few years ago, I was working with the Wake Forest, NC, Chamber of Commerce on their planning process. During the intial planning meeting, a past Chairman of the Board made a comment that stuck with me. He said, "Chuck, we are already a successful organization. Each one of us around this table can point to numerous successes that we have been responsible for. What we want to gain through the strategic planning process is to move from success to significance." You must make certain that your organization becomes significant... to the membership... and to the community that you serve.
Remember, the future belongs to the courageous... it belongs to the risk-takers... it belongs to those who will boldly move their organizations forward. The future does not belong to those who simply sit back and watch things happen or wait for things to improve. In 2011, you must be a pro-active, visionary leader! You must make a positive difference for your organization! If you want to become indispensable... lead the organization through a meaningful planning process. Let us know how we can help!
