Celebrate our 40th Anniversary by Sharing your Favorite SOCM Memories

Preparations are underway for SOCM's Annual Meeting and 40th Birthday Celebration on October 20th. To get ready, we need to hear from you. Who better to tell SOCM's story than those who are responsible for its success?

In 500 words or less, we want to hear your favorite SOCM memory, what SOCM has meant to you, how SOCM helped you fight injustice in your community, or anything else you want to share.

Please share your story with Casey Self at casey@socm.org or 2507 Mineral Springs Avenue, Suite D, Knoxville, TN, 37917. And please plan to join us at Henry Horton State Park on Saturday, October 20th!

We will use your stories throughout the year as we celebrate 40 years of organizing for justice.

SOCM Learns from Marguerite Casey Foundation Conference on Equal Voice 2012

SOCM Executive Director Amelia Parker, Communications Director Casey Self, and member Kim Mays were in Los Angeles last week attending a conference hosted by the Marguerite Casey Foundation. The Marguerite Casey Foundation and its grantee organizations have put together a national platform on what issues are important to families. Over 15,000 people from 30 states participated in the convention to create the 2012 Equal Voice for America's Families National Platform. Families decided they wanted decision-makers to focus on topics such as education, health care, housing, immigration reform, environmental issues, food security, and more.

For more information, go to www.equalvoiceforfamilies.org.

We look forward to bringing you more from the 2012 Equal Voice for America's Families National Platform in the future.

SOCM's Knoxville Chapter is Hosting a Yard Sale!

The Knoxville chapter is hosting a yard sale at the SOCM office, August 11th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.! Members and staff are donating items to be sold at great prices and we have some office equipment that we just aren't using anymore. We'll also have SOCM gear available for purchase and to give away.

If you have items to donate to the yard sale, please drop them off at the Knoxville Office (2507 Mineral Springs Avenue, Suite D) on or before Friday, August 10th. You don't have to price anything or be present at the sale on Saturday. We'll take care of it for you!

Contact Amelia Parker if you have any questions. Amelia can be reached at amelia@socm.org or 865.249.7488.

We hope to see you out on Saturday and thanks for supporting SOCM!

Theory of Social Change Finalized

Since February, several SOCM members have been working hard to answer some thought-provoking questions about our organization. We've had two workshops so far to figure out where SOCM has been, where we are going, and how we are going to get there. We call this our "Theory of Social Change."

Click here for a copy of the Theory of Social Change.

We will have one more workshop, August 18-19, in Lebanon, Tenn. Anyone interested in participating, please contact Amelia Parker at amelia@socm.org or 865.249.7488.

We've greatly appreciated our consultant and facilitator, Mary Ochs, for all of her hard work and especially give thanks to the members who have worked so hard to see SOCM is headed in the right direction.
