SOCM'ites Take to the Streets in Knoxville

SOCM members and staff enjoyed a beautiful day out in Knoxville on Saturday, April 14th, while participating in our "Knoxville Blitz." About 20 of us went to eight different neighborhoods spreading the word about Knoxville's upcoming chapter meeting on Monday, May 14th and gauging the community's interest in green-collar jobs and more opportunities for energy efficiency. We had some great feedback!

A special thanks goes to Knoxville Organizer Katie Greer and Organizing Director Kazi Wilkins for putting the event together, and also to all the members who gave up their Saturday to make an improvement in their community.

At the annual meeting last fall, the membership decided to start a Knoxville chapter due in part to the large membership contingency and the unique opportunities to work on energy efficiency and green-collar jobs in the area. Knoxville's first meeting will be on Monday, May 14th at 6 p.m. EST at the Burlington Library. City of Knoxville Mayor (and longtime SOCM member) Madeline Rogero will be kicking off the meeting. Everyone is invited and please bring a friend!

New Member Carl Wilkey Wins SOCM Gear!

SOCM Gear
New member Carl Wilkey has been chosen as this month's "Spring into SOCM" winner! Carl, from Dayton, Tenn., will receive some SOCM gear so he can start showing his love of SOCM. Congratulations Carl!

From now until June 30th, new members will be entered into a drawing for a special prize each month. We're only halfway through the month and we've already had eight new members! If you've been about becoming a member, this spring is a great time to join.

We're continuing to recognize recruiters also. If you recruit a member, make sure they recognize you as the recruiter and your name will also be entered into a monthly drawing. In two weeks we will be giving away a beautiful fish charm you can put on your keys.

Good luck to all new members and recruiters. We appreciate all of you!
Organizing Director Kazi Wilkins Visits Chapters

Last week, Organizing Director Kazi Wilkins had the pleasure of visiting several SOCM chapters in an effort to meet leaders, check in on issue work and do a few trainings.

At the Cumberland Chapter meeting on April 9th, Kazi had the opportunity to see how members are working together to push forward on their issue work even without an organizer!  In addition to other issue work, there was an excellent discussion about the need to regroup after the Crab Orchard win and consider how to harness some of the energy generated by that victory.  Members also stated their desire to stay flexible about issue work in an effort to respond to issues as they come up in the community.

The Bedford County chapter meeting on April 10th was exciting because several old members returned and there were a few new faces around the table, as well! In an effort to continue issue work, members brainstormed which community members and leaders the chapter should have a relationship with, and made a plan to begin reaching out to those individuals and organizations.

At the Maury County chapter meeting on April 11th, leaders did serious strategy work around an issue of great concern to community members in Columbia, and made a decision to hold a SOCM chapter meeting in that community in an effort to bring the people directly affected to the table.

Thank you to all SOCM leaders for their time in conversation with Kazi over these past several weeks and months. She is already looking forward to the next round of trips and trainings.

Staff Builds Relationships for Better Energy Future

On April 2nd, SOCM organizer Katie Greer and director Amelia Parker travelled to Boston to attend the Beyond Business as Usual: Realizing an American Renewable Energy Future by 2050 conference hosted by the Civil Society Institute and the Environmental Working Group. The trip was a great opportunity to spend time with strong partners and allies of SOCM and meet the staff of organizations that SOCM has partnered with over its 40-year history such as the Western Organization of Resource Councils, KFTC (Kentuckians for the Commonwealth), MACED (Mountain Association for Community Economic Development), OVEC (Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition), and others.

Over the two days, groups discussed how we can work together to build a clean, healthy and sustainable energy future for our country.  We look forward to participating in future discussions with our partners and creating an action plan that will protect public health, promote energy independence, and the economic well being of all Americans. To get involved with SOCM's work to create a new energy future for our communities, contact Katie Greer at katie@socm.org or call 865.249.7488.

Theory of Social Change Work Continues April 28-29

At the beginning of February, about 40 SOCM leaders and staff met in Lebanon, Tenn., to figure out where we are as an organization and where we are headed. The French American Charitable Trust (FACT) funded the workshop and a visit by organizational consultant Mary Ochs. It was a great meeting for everyone involved.

The group will be convening again April 28-29 to conclude the workshop. Some of the things we'll be talking about are our relationships with other organizations, our strategic plan, and how we tell our story.

For more information, please contact Amelia Parker at amelia@socm.org or 865.249.7488.

SOCM Members Work to Improve Communities

Kim at Knoxville RallySOCM members have been very busy these last few weeks. Many members went to rallies and demonstrations in remembrance of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed boy who was killed in Florida by the captain of the neighborhood watch. The goal of these peaceful demonstrations was to bring awareness to the problems of gun violence and racial prejudice- two serious threats to communities across to Tennessee. Pictured here is member Kim Mays at the Knoxville demonstration.
