About    Our Work      Chapters     Committees      Get Involved
Sunday, April 1, 2012

It's that time of the year again.  Spring is upon us so let's see this season as a time to renew our energy to work for justice in our communities and find others to help bring about that change. Spring into SOCM is a special membership drive that encourages folks to join in our efforts to create a better Tennessee.  Let's come together, stay informed, get organized, and be ready to respond when events in our communities impact the common good.  We, the people, have a right to have a voice in those developments that impact us.  Together, we can use our collective power to create the changes we want to see in our communities and across the state of Tennessee.

Are you a member of SOCM yet?  If not, join today and receive special perks during the Spring into SOCM membership drive!  Are your friends and neighbors impacted by the issues that SOCM works on?  If so, tell them about SOCM and encourage them to join in our work to end mountaintop removal, keep our waterways clean, fight racial injustices in communities, bring green-collar jobs to the state, and advocate for economic and social equality.

How Spring into SOCM Works

From now until June 30th, you have two ways to win prizes for membership recruitment. For existing members, we'll still be pushing our "Every Member Get a Member" campaign- For each member you recruit, your name will be put into a monthly drawing for some great items donated by amazing SOCM members and friends. During Spring into SOCM, new members' names will also be put into a monthly drawing. AND, all new members who sign up between now and June 30th will receive a free magnet in their welcome packet! If you or someone you know has been thinking about joining, now is the time!

Every Member a Member Winner

This month's Every Member Get a Member winner is Ben Salter, who the Tibetan knives! Ben has been a member for SOCM for several years and enjoys supporting SOCM at Knoxville events. He's excited about being a part of the Knoxville chapter starting this Spring!

We'll be drawing another recruiter's name at the beginning of May for this beautiful fish charm. Put it on your key ring as a reminder of your efforts to build a community of organized individuals working together to ensure social, economic and environmental justice for their communities.

Tennessee's Legislative Session Coming to a Close

It's been a short, yet busy, year for SOCM's legislative committee. While we didn't get the outcome we were hoping for from some of our bills, the responses to our action alerts were outstanding. Thank you to everyone who contacted legislators and everyone who came to Lobby Day this year.

The Scenic Vistas Protection Act and the Responsible Coal Operators Act of 2012 were sent to summer study by the House Subcommittee on Conservation and Environment. Summer studies are sometimes known as "legislative black holes" because many committee members do not participate and they tend to last a long time. Don't worry though, we will continue to fight for both of these bills to be brought to the floor for votes.

The English-Only Exam Bill was taken off notice. We are still waiting for the Sewanee Prohibition Bill to be put on the agenda. Please keep an eye on our legislative page for updates.

Many SOCM members have expressed interest in meeting with legislators in preparation for next year. We plan to set up meetings in several districts. Contact Organizing Director Kazi Wilkins at kazi@socm.org for more information.

Knoxville Presents The EarthBeats Festival

April 21st, 2012

Knoxville is ready to celebrate Earth Week! SOCM and SPEAK (Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville) will host an Earth Day-themed concert on Saturday, April 21st, from 1 to 7 p.m., in downtown Knoxville. Bring your kids (and pets) to the World's Fair Park Amphitheater for a great afternoon out. Our line-up features five local musical talents including The Theorizt, Jonathan Sexton, Big Country's Empty Bottle, Jodie Manross, and Smiley and the Lovedawg. Emceeing the event and entertaining us with their comedy will be members of the Black Liver Society comedy troupe.

Local artists and vendors will be on site, selling arts and crafts and other goodies.  Informational tables will be set-up throughout the venue by local non-profits.  And attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a collective art project.   It's an event for the entire community!

Tickets for EarthBeats Festival can be purchased at the door for $5. Drinks and food will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the environmental justice work of SOCM and SPEAK.

E3 Members Lobby Against Mountaintop Removal in Washington

On March 12th, SOCM board member Patrick Morales and Staffer Ann League traveled to Washington, DC to participate in meetings with the Army Corp of Engineers and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and to lobby for the Clean Water Protection Act. The trip was sponsored by The Alliance for Appalachia and included people from Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. If you would like to be apart of a trip like this in the future, you can get involved by contacting Ann League at ann@socm.org or by calling 865-249-7488.

The Alliance for Appalachia is a regional coalition of organizations of which SOCM is one of the founding member groups. The Alliance's goal is to end mountaintop removal coal mining, putting a halt to destructive coal technologies, and creating a sustainable, just Appalachia.

SOCM Member Todd Shelton Honored by Community Shares Todd Profile

Chair of SOCM's Personnel Committee, Todd Shelton, will be honored at Community Shares' Annual Circle of Change Awards on Saturday, April 14.  Congratulations, Todd!

Todd will be receiving the Heart of Change Award which is given by Community Shares to an individual "who has made social change a significant part of their life's work by working to create or strengthen one or more grassroots organizations whose mission is to address some form of injustice."

Todd has been an active member of SOCM since the 1980s and previously served on the Board. Currently he is a member of the Anti-Racism Transformation Team and serves as the chair of the Personnel Committee.  The Personnel Committee Chair plays an important role in SOCM's member-run structure, providing critical support to staff and leadership for the organization. We are so proud of Todd and grateful for his continued commitment to work alongside SOCM members for the betterment of our communities and for the growth of our organization.
Fun Ways You Can Support SOCM

In addition to member recruitment, how else can you help support your favorite statewide, grassroots organizing group? There are plenty of ways to get involved!

1. Donate to SOCM. Now it's easier than ever to donate to SOCM. Head over to our donate page for two easy, safe ways to donate online. You can also call the office at 865-249-7488. We can now process credit cards in the office.
2.  Host a house party. Several SOCM members have had great fun hosting parties for their friends to tell them about SOCM. With staff support, a house party can be very successful and easy.
3. Table at a local event. Members and staff love to table. It's a fun way to meet new people and tell them about SOCM and all the work we are doing. You might be surprised how many interested people approach the SOCM table. We always are!
4. Party, party, party! There are so many ways to build our work while having fun. Contact Development Director Jennie Caissie at jennie@socm.org for more ideas.

If you have other ideas to help SOCM fundraise and build our membership, or you want more information, please contact Development Director Jennie Caissie at jennie@socm.org or 865-249-7488.
