Roaring River Hosts 13th Annual Wine Tasting

Chapter's Annual Fundraiser Successful

Roaring River Wine Tasting 2011
What a fun evening for Roaring River Chapter members and friends! Over 60 people attended the Roaring River Chapter's Annual Wine Tasting on December 3rd at Art a la Carte Gallery in Cookeville.

Guests enjoyed great wine, delicious hors d'oeuvres, live music, beautiful art and wonderful company as they talked SOCM throughout the evening. The event serves as a great way for SOCM members to pay their dues through their admission fee, while supporting the chapter's annual fundraising goals. This year, Roaring River raised $500 and signed up 12 new members. Congratulations!

We want to send a special thanks to Brian Paddock and Mary Mastin for organizing the event and to Arlene Dubo for allowing us to use her beautiful gallery.
Knoxville Office Hosts Holiday Open House

Knoxville-area residents celebrated the holidays with
Knoxville Holiday Open House
friends and staff at a holiday open house on December 1st. New staffers enjoyed the opportunity to meet members and show off their decorated offices.

About 40 people stopped by to say "hello" and find out what projects SOCM will be working on next year. The Knoxville office is ready for the Holidays and, even better, ready to start 2012.

Looking for a Great Gift Idea?

Well look no further! A SOCM membership for a friend or loved one makes a great holiday gift. When you gift a membership, you are not only supporting SOCM, but you are encouraging them to support a cause you believe in. A donation in honor of someone is also a nice way to show you care, while supporting the important work SOCM does every day. Remember that your donation can count towards a membership.

You can also shop with a purpose. Online shopping is even more popular now than ever and is a great way to get all of your holiday shopping done with no hassle. So why not earn SOCM money while getting all of your holiday shopping out of the way?

Register with GoodSearch as your search tool and each time you click on a website SOCM receives a donation. For more information about GoodSearch and how to register, please click here.

Once you have registered with GoodSearch, also register with GoodShop and GoodDining, and SOCM receives a donation based on a percentage of your total purchases through that website. There are over 2500 merchants who support non-profits through GoodSearch so give it a try!

And of course, don't forget to check out the SOCM Store! This year we have a new item - the SOCM Chico Bag - great for grocery shopping.  Whether it's a chico bag or a SOCM mug, SOCM items make for great stocking stuffers.

SOCM at The Alliance for Appalachia Regional Conversation on Economic Transition

SOCM Board member Patrick Morales and Green Collar Jobs Organizer Katie Greer made a trip to Prestonsburg, Ky., for The Alliance for Appalachia's first Regional Conversation on Economic Transition on November 12th. The group took time to learn about each other's work, share strategies, and explore what is needed in the region to advance transition to a more sustainable economy.

Later that week E3 organizer Ann League joined Patrick in Prestonsburg for The Alliance for Appalachia's quarterly steering committee meeting. SOCM is proud to announce that Patrick was elected to the coordinating committee at the meeting. The Alliance for Appalachia is a coalition of groups from central Appalachia working together to stop Mountaintop Removal coal mining and work towards a just and sustainable Appalachia.

By sharing our best practices and lessons learned with our neighbors, we can be more strategic and effective in what we do. SOCM connected with other organizations in Appalachia working to organize around energy efficiency, renewable energy, and the economy. We plan to keep these conversations going throughout the year.
Sadie Hill Wins December's EMGM Prize

Sadie Hill, an active Bedford County Chapter member, won this month's "Every Member Get a Member" prize. Congratulations Sadie! We will be sending her a beautiful handmade necklace and earrings from Box of Pearls.

EMGM Seiko Clock

Next month, we will be giving away a Seiko desk clock valued at $125. Now sounds like a good time to gift a membership to SOCM for your friends and family members. This clock would look great on your desk, end table or mantle.

Our Every Member Get a Member campaign is still going strong and we still have a year left. Keep up the great work!

We Appreciate Your Support at SOCM

In the spirit of the Holiday season, we want to thank all of you for your continued support of and investment in the work that SOCM does. We really think we have the best members any organization could ask for.

As 2011 comes to a close, you may be thinking of making an end of year donation. SOCM would appreciate you keeping us in mind. Your gift will help support our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for all Tennesseans and fight the social, economic and environmental injustices we are all facing today. Happy Holidays from all of us at SOCM!
