Walk for Justice in Crossville, Chapel Hill, Jackson or Knoxville
SOCM's Annual Walk for Justice Raises Money to Improve Our Communities
The time is near! Start getting the word out! SOCM members and friends will walk to improve the quality of life in their communities this fall and you can join them! The Cumberland and Roaring River chapters will walk for justice on Saturday, October 29th at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville. The Bedford County and Maury County Chapters will hold their walk on Saturday, November 12th at Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill. The Jackson Chapter will also hold its walk on November 12th. And we are pleased to announce the first-ever Walk for Justice in Knoxville on November 12th at Tyson Park.
If you would like to walk, please visit our website www.socm.org and click on the walk you would like to participate in under the calendar of events. There you can find a sponsor sheet. When asking your friends and neighbors to sponsor you, remember to mention that we are walking to:
- Improve the quality of life in the community.
- Build a green-collar economy that attracts high-paying, sustainable industry jobs.
- Create racially-just communities where all are empowered.
- Protect our environment.
- Preserve our rich heritage for generations to come.
- Defend our rights as local residents to have a say in what goes on in our communities.
If you can't make it, please consider sponsoring a participant instead. You can send a donation to the SOCM office or through the website and specify which chapter or walker you would like to sponsor.

Thanks for a Great Annual Meeting!
We want to thank all our members who joined us last weekend at our annual meeting. We had a great time! Members got together to learn about new opportunities to increase energy efficiency in the home and how to conduct successful voter registration drives. The agenda also included workshops on lobbying, Tennessee's health insurance exchanges, racial profiling, landfills, mountaintop removal, and more.
We also did a lot of housekeeping. We would like to welcome our new Board Treasurer, Franz Raetzer, and at-large delegates Anna Bogle, Patrick Morales and Sarah White. Members provided feedback on upcoming SOCM priorities and we got down to business with a tug-of-war competition to decide which group was stronger, "wisdom" or "youth." "Wisdom" won again.

Green Jobs Coalition Questions Knoxville Mayoral Candidates
SOCM Joins other Knoxville Organizations to Host November 1st Debate
SOCM is helping bring green jobs and opportunities for energy efficient homes to Knoxville by partnering with like-minded organizations in the city. The newly-formed Knoxville Green Jobs Coalition is hosting a City of Knoxville Mayoral Debate on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the Pellissippi State Community College- Magnolia Campus. Doors will open at 6:30 and the debate will start at 7 p.m.
In addition to questioning the candidates on their future plans for energy efficient programs and green jobs, the Coalition will unveil its intent to partner with the city in an "Energy Alliance" program to increase access to quality jobs, energy efficiency, and renewable energy for low and moderate-income residents. The program will be called the Knoxville Energy Alliance and Partnership for Green Jobs, or KEAP Green Jobs. "Save Our Community Day" Brings 500 in Jackson
Once again, our SOCM-Jackson members have outdone themselves. Their incredibly successful "Save Our Community Day," held on October 8, brought a crowd of nearly 500 to Muse Park in Jackson. Neighbors enjoyed food, music, dancing, basketball and hula-hoop contests, tae kwon do demonstrations, and more. In addition to learning about SOCM's work, attendees were able to pick up information about several organizations working for a better community in Jackson.
