You can still "Spring Into SOCM" by becoming a member and receiving a free mug through June 20!

outings for these sunny days in plenty, so don't get bored before considering a few of these justice-fused gatherings.

For those in the Maury Co. area, be sure to make your way over for a fish fry, June 18, at Fresh Word Ministries in Columbia, Tenn. Those in Knoxville, Tenn. can gear up for a showing of "The Last Mountain," July 22, at the Downtown West Regal Cinema and should also have the Knoxville office Open House event marked on the calendar for this Friday, June 17.

Of course, we must also highlight the Summer Picnic planned by the Roaring River and Cumberland chapters, June 18, at Cane Creek Park in Cookeville, Tenn.

Keep reading to find more details below, and reach out to the SOCM Knoxville office by emailing info@socm.org or by calling 865.249.7488 with questions. And remember, if these events are too far away for your traveling pleasure, consider hosting a house party or other event in your neck of the woods. We'll help bring SOCM to you!

Sincerely,

Your SOCM Team

Coal liquefaction plant threat moves towns

Morristown next in line to deal with plant proposal

Although it seems that the coal liquefaction* plant proposal in Cumberland Co. has been abandoned, the threat now looms largely in a new town.

The Morristown, Tenn. newspaper recently reported that the Industrial Development Board has embraced the pie in the sky proposal from "Freedom Energy Diesel" to build a coal to liquids plant in the area.

At the plant, an untested "plasma" process would be used to extract liquid diesel fuel from coal, leaving little piles of metal and pollutant waste for tidy disposition or sale.

To help challenge the proposal, the Cumberland SOCM Chapter and the Sierra Club have provided research notes and appropriate questions for regulators to help locals challenge the proposal. If you love in the Morristown area and want to help fight a proposed coal liquefaction plant, contact Stacy at 931-881-8538 or email stacey@socm.org.

Attend a documentary showing in Knoxville to benefit SOCM, July 22
Premier of "The Last Mountain" at Downtown West Theater

The Last Mountain
Don't miss the premier showing of "The Last Mountain" in Knoxville, Tenn.

You've heard all the hype about The Last Mountain, the newest documentary highlighting the devastation that mountaintop removal coal mining brings to communities. Now, you can see the award-winning documentary in Knoxville, Tenn., benefiting SOCM and other area non-profits.

Be sure to buy your tickets early because the showing in Nashville at the Belcourt Theater, June 9, sold out and featured a packed house. Member Vickie Terry was featured during a panel discussion, discussing mountaintop removal. The Knoxville showing will take place July 22 at the Downtown West Theater.

SOCM is thrilled to once again be partnering in support of this fantastic representation of one West Virginia community's fight to stop coal mining from destroying their land.
