ACTION NEEDED: Ask legislators to OPPOSE Arizona Copycat Bill
ACTION NEEDED: Ask legislators to SUPPORT Green Jobs Career & Technical Education Bill
ACTION NEEDED: Ask legislators to SUPPORT Hydrological Fracturing (Fracking) Resolution

SOCM members and supporters,

In these last days of the legislative session, the fight for People, Jobs, & the Environment continues. Make sure your citizen voices are heard! Community unity continues to be attacked as immigrants continue to be targeted. Meanwhile, green jobs career and technical education could be expanded throughout our educational system, offering new career pathways across the state including in many of our more rural, underserved areas. And the House has an opportunity to take an important first step towards regulating the still-new gas drilling technique known as fracking. Keep up your communication and contact your legislators today! If they are on these committees, they need to hear from you before their committee meetings tomorrow, Wednesday, 4/27.

1) Stop the Arizona Copycat bill:
This bill was approved by the House State and Local Committee. Again, according to the TN Fiscal Review Committee, these Arizona-style bills would cost the state nearly $9 million a year to implement. New, unfunded mandates to interrogate and detain immigrants would also cost local governments an additional $961,593 a year. Furthermore, these bills must be voted down so there is not a potential for more racial profiling by local authorities. The Arizona Copycat bill was rolled to the 4/27 calendar. Please Contact these Representatives and ask them to VOTE NO on HB 1380.

2) Expand Green Jobs Career & Technical Education across the state:
The major manufacturing base of our economy has declined, and communities have been devastated by the loss of their economic base. Some of you visited the Tennessee Technology Center at Pulaski's Solar Photovoltaic certificate program during SOCM's Green-Collar Jobs Tour last year. This bill would establish a green jobs career and technical education program that meets current industry standards and prepares students for employment in the emerging environmental and sustainability sectors of the economy. On 4/13, the Senate Education Committee recommended it for passage, referring it to the Senate Finance, Ways, & Means Committee. Tomorrow, it will come before the House Education Subcommittee. Please contact these Representatives and ask them to VOTE YES on HB 1957 Montgomery, a bill that impacts our shared economic future.

3) Hydrological Fracturing (Fracking) should be regulated in TN!
What chemicals are gas companies pumping into the ground in Tennessee? Nobody knows because Tennessee has no regulations or public oversight governing this gas drilling technique. Last Tuesday, the House Conservation & Environment Subcommittee heard an announcement that Representative Jeanne Richardson (D-Memphis) has introduced HR 0098, which encourages meetings of interested parties and the development of appropriate state regulations regarding hydrological fracturing (fracking). This resolution puts the House on record as supporting new regulations in a political climate not happy about existing regulations, and is an important first step. Call these Representatives today and ask them to do the right thing and VOTE YES on HR 0098.
