Building green, sustainable jobs in Tennessee
Volunteers needed for jobs developmentThe SOCM Green-Collar Jobs Committee met April 30 to discuss development strategy that can spark jobs growth in Tennessee. At the meeting, members fueled each other's excitement about the possibilities of a weatherization and energy education initiatives. They were confident that their friends and neighbors will be motivated to learn and push area agencies and leaders, given rising energy costs reflected in utility bills. Members are looking forward to spreading the word about dirty energy challenges and the job and environmental opportunities that clean energy and energy efficiency present. This year, members felt confident that the High Growth Sustainable Jobs bill had potential for passage in Tennessee, but the legislation failed to move forward. Despite disappointment, members are already planning for success in 2012! Are you interested in joining the Green-Collar Jobs Committee's efforts? Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to address changes to gas drilling regulations proposed by the Tennessee Oil and Gas Board. With several media representatives in attendance and a full listing of environmental expert speakers, the message for drilling regulation was clear! As the process known as fracking continues to grow, implementing appropriate regulation is vitally important. The Chevron Corporation recently acquired 120,000 acres in Tennessee with an explicit goal of exploiting the natural gas potential of the Chattanooga Shale. There are an estimated 500 potential drilling sites within that acreage. TDEC's Geological Department reports that there are 15,340 gas and oil wells in the state. Sponsors of the People's Hearing included: Tennessee League of Women Voters, Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning (TCWP), Sierra Club, Tennessee Clean Water Network (TCWN), United Mountain Defense (UMD), and Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM). To become involved in oil and gas regulation efforts in Tennessee, contact Ann League, SOCM Organizer, at 865.249.7488 or email ann@socm.org. Thanks to all those in attendance during the rally!
