English-only Bill Moved to 2012!

ACTION NEEDED: Arizona Copycat Bill scheduled in House Sub-committee of Finance

SOCM members and supporters,

The English-only drivers license bill has been moved to be considered next year! This is a huge success. This victory should be celebrated by all that support the rights of immigrants throughout Bedford Co. Tennesseeour state and country.

The fight is not over though. We need you to act now to help us stop the Arizona Copycat bill.

Last week, dangerous bills were approved by the House State and Local Committee, including the Arizona copycat bill. The real scandal about these bills is the cost. According to the TN Fiscal Review Committee, these Arizona-style bills would cost the state nearly $9 million a year to implement. New, unfunded mandates to interrogate and detain immigrants would also cost local governments an additional $961,593 a year.

Rep. Gerald McCormick, of Chattanooga, has expressed his concerns around the potential for an increased number of racial profiling incidents that could occur if HB 1380/ SB 780 are approved. These bills must be voted down so there is not a potential for more racial profiling by local authorities.

The Arizona Copycat Bill has been placed on the calendar for April 20th. The fight has now moved to the House Finance Ways and Means Subcommittee.

Please Contact the members of the General Sub-committee of Finance and ask them to Vote No on HB 1380. Members include:
