Mountaintop Removal
Bills Deferred
Still time to call your representative to make sure these bills pass!
Dear SOCM members and supporters,
Last week, the TN Senate Environment, Conservation, & Tourism Committee decided to defer any action on both versions of the "Tennessee Scenic Vistas Protection Act," SB 0578 Stewart and SB 0577 Stewart, until later in March. Action by the Committee is expected March 23. However, we need you to continue making calls this week and next to ensure these bills pass. Call your State Senator and House Rep today and ask them to vote in support of HB 291/SB 577 to stop mountaintop removal coal mining in Tennessee.
Call your TN Senator and House Representative today to ask that they vote YES on HB 290/SB 0578 and HB 291/SB 0577. Find your representative by clicking here.
SB 0577 Stewart E.: Prohibition on surface mining at specified elevation levels. Prohibits the Commissioner of Environment and Conservation from issuing or renewing a permit, certification, or variance that allows surface coal mining operations that will disturb ridgelines above 2,000 feet elevation above sea level with exceptions made for underground mining. (HOUSE: HB 0291, McDonald; Referred to House General Subcommittee of Conservation and Environment.)
SB 0578 Stewart E.: Prohibits surface coal mining if it disturbs ridgeline. Prohibits the Commissioner of Environment and Conservation from issuing or renewing a permit that would allow surface coal mining operations to alter or disturb any ridgeline that is over 2,000 feet elevation above sea level. (HOUSE: HB 0290, McDonald; Referred to House General Subcommittee of Conservation and Environment.)
Thank you for taking the time to make sure your voice is heard for measures that protect communities, mountains and water quality! Sincerely, Your SOCM Team
