Call today to protect Tenn. mountains and communities
Tenn. Senate committee to consider mountaintop removal bills tomorrow, March 2

Dear SOCM members and supporters,

The Tennessee Senate Environment, Conservation, & Tourism Committee is scheduled to hear both versions of a bill, nicknamed the "Tennessee Scenic Vistas Protection Act," SB 0578 Stewart and SB 0577 Stewart, tomorrow, Mar. 2 at 1:30 p.m. CST. Both bills would prohibit altering or disturbing ridgelines above 2,000 feet elevation with surface coal mining (more details below). If passed, these bills would serve to enhance the quality of life and natural resources in Tennessee's mountain communities.

Call your Tennessee Senators today to ask that they vote YES on SB 0578 and SB 0577. Find your Senator by clicking here.

SB 0577 Stewart E.: Prohibition on surface mining at specified elevation levels. Prohibits the commissioner of environment and conservation from issuing or renewing a permit, certification, or variance that allows surface coal mining operations that will disturb ridgelines above 2,000 feet elevation above sea level with exceptions made for underground mining.
(HOUSE: HB 0291, McDonald; Referred to House General Subcommittee of Conservation and Environment.)

SB 0578 Stewart E.: Prohibits surface coal mining if it disturbs ridgeline. Prohibits the commissioner of environment and conservation from issuing or renewing a permit that would allow surface coal mining operations to alter or disturb any ridgeline that is over 2,000 feet elevation above sea level.
(HOUSE: HB 0290, McDonald; Referred to House General Subcommittee of Conservation and Environment.)

Thank you for taking the time to make sure your voice is heard for measures that protect communities, mountains and water quality!

Sincerely,

Your SOCM Team  Board - Long Pic, Holding hands
