UMKC alumna receives Fulbright Scholarship 
Maria Iliakova, a 2009 UMKC School of Biological Sciences and College of Arts and Sciences alumna with a triple major in Biology, Chemistry and Spanish, has received a Fulbright Scholarship to study biology in Barcelona, Spain. Read more

UMKC School of Pharmacy's Ashim Mitra achieves world ranking
According to biomedexperts.com, Ashim K. Mitra, Ph.D., Chairman of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the UMKC School of Pharmacy, has co-authored the third-highest number of publications in the world in the areas of "Prodrugs" during the last 10 years. Mitra's prodrugs research is important in drug design and delivery. ADVANCE URBAN ENGAGEMENT
 
UMKC presents honorary doctoral degrees to two Kansas City leaders
In recognition of their outstanding commitment to the University and to the community, UMKC presented Kansas City leaders Tom Bloch and Jane Chu with honorary doctoral degrees. Bloch received an honorary doctorate in business administration from the UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration, and Chu received an honorary doctorate in music from the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. Read more 
 
Urban Planning students present vision for Independence Avenue
The capstone urban planning and design studio at the UMKC Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design presented a development strategy for northeast Kansas City's Independence Avenue. The plan included both short- and long-term strategies to transform the area. Read more 
 
 
EXCEL IN THE VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
 
Kansas City Repertory Theatre's Venice named "Musical of the Year" by Time magazine
Venice, a collaboration between Eric Rosen, artistic director of the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and composer-performer Matt Sax, is recognized by Time for "the richness and power of this work." Read more
 
Chen Yi receives honorary degree from The New School in New York
Cited as "a composer who blends Chinese and Western traditions, transcending cultural and musical boundaries," Chen Yi, D.M.A., the Lorena Searcy Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor in Music Composition at UMKC, received the accolade at The New School's commencement in May. Paul Rudy wins Rome prize
Paul Rudy -- a Guggenheim Fellow, internationally-acclaimed composer and UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance professor, has earned the prestigious Elliott Carter Rome Prize in musical composition. Rudy, who is also coordinator of composition and director of the Inter-media/Music Production and Computer Technology Center at the Conservatory, joins an illustrious group of composers who have won the prize. Osher Foundation president announces $1 million scholarship endowment for nontraditional students
Mary G.F. Bitterman, Ph.D., president of the San Francisco-based Bernard Osher Foundation, announced a $1 million endowment and $50,000 bridge grant for the Osher Reentry Scholarship program at UMKC. UMKC is one of only nine U.S. schools receive a $1 million Osher Reentry Program endowment this year. Read more

UMKC Students in Free Enterprise team is victorious in regional competition 
The UMKC Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team walked away from the regional SIFE competition in Chicago with the league championship trophy for the third consecutive year. The multidisciplinary team -- including students from Business, Computing and Engineering, and Biological Sciences competed with more than 70 other schools in the region. Venture Creation Challenge winners announced
The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the UMKC Bloch School announced the winning teams of the 2010 Regnier Family Foundation's Venture Creation Challenge. Each of the five winning teams will receive a business Launch Package valued at $15,000. Read more

UMKC School of Law alumnus Arthur H. Stoup honored
The family of Arthur H. Stoup has given would-be litigators at the UMKC School of Law a new place to polish their skills and practice their training. The new Arthur H. Stoup Courtroom was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 30. Read more

UMKC Henry W. Bloch School hosts international scholar, Chung-An Chen 
UMKC Bloch School's Department of Public Affairs and the Midwest Institute for Nonprofit Leadership are hosting international post-doctoral fellow Chung-An Chen. Chen's primary areas of expertise include public administration, public and nonprofit management, human resource management, public personnel management, organizational theory and organizational behavior. Read more 
 

SYSTEM NEWS
 
Board of Curators extends UMKC's Metro Rate
At its April meeting, the Board of Curators voted to continue the tuition freeze for undergraduate students, and elected to extend the Metro Rate (in-state rate) to undergraduates in 11 nearby Kansas counties. The Metro Rate is now also available to graduate students with the exception of those pursuing professional degrees in certain areas. Read more
