New Student Union welcomes students to campus

When fall semester begins next week, the vibrant Student Union will be open for business. As the center of campus life, it complements the University's strategic plan by focusing on student success. The facility houses the bookstore, a variety of student organizations, provides technology-rich study spaces and features striking views of the city UMKC calls home. Iconic map will be lit Sunday outside of UMKC's Miller Nichols Library

At more than 22 feet high and 49 feet wide, the architectural artwork described by officials as "iconic and visually stunning" will be lit Sunday on the UMKC campus, with a formal dedication Sept. 29. The historical map of Kansas City's rivers, rails and trails, originally dated 1926, has been re-created through a series of perforations on metal and lit from behind. Attached to the Miller Nichols Library addition, it will be illuminated nightly. Read more
UMKC professor emeritus and wife make $1 million gift to School of Education
Campbell and Wheelock | UMKC professor emeritus Warren H. Wheelock and his wife, Connie Campbell, an alumna, have made the largest individual gift commitment in the history of the UMKC School of Education. Both Campbell and Wheelock have devoted their careers to improving lives through reading education and research. The gift finances the Dr. Warren Wheelock Scholarship in Reading Education. Joan and Bert Berkley Excellence in Urban Education grant awards urban educators
The Joan and Bert Berkley Excellence in Urban Education Grants program supports the efforts of teachers and counselors in the nine urban school districts and charter schools that partner with the UMKC School of Education. Nearly $25,000 was awarded to the school's partners this year. Read more

UMKC Conservatory announces new concert series collaborating with local arts groups
When Peter Witte took the helm at UMKC's Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2008, he made it a point to step off campus and connect with the local arts community. Now that open style of leadership has paid off with a revamped concert series that collaborates with the Friends of Chamber Music, the Kansas City Symphony and the Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company. Kansas City's win|win initiative aims to elevate more women to board and executive roles
The win|win initiative was formed in 2009 by the the UMKC Bloch School, Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Kansas City Area Development Council and The Central Exchange. Alumnus Mark Steele is new president of American Board of Emergency Medicine
Mark Steele, M.D., has assumed the office of President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Dr. Steele currently serves as chief medical officer at Truman Medical Centers and is professor of emergency medicine at UMKC, where he completed his medical degree in 1980. Read more

UM System vice president and UMKC Foundation board member receives highest honor from national business officers association
Nikki Krawitz, vice president of Finance and Administration for the University of Missouri System, recently received the Distinguished Business Officer award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the highest individual honor bestowed by the organization. Krawitz also serves on the UMKC Foundation board of directors. Read more
