The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season heats up with a trip to the Southeast this weekend for the AdvoCare 500 in Atlanta, Ga. Front Row Motorsports welcomes new sponsorship partner Vampt on the No. 38 Ford Fusion, driven by J.J. Yeley.
David Gilliland and the No. 34 A&W All American Food team, Yeley and the No. 38 Vampt team and Travis Kvapil and the No. 55 Lazy Days RV team got their first practice laps in on Friday evening, and then a second and final practice on Saturday afternoon. The Saturday session brought a tough challenge for the No. 38 Vampt team, with Yeley scraping the wall on his first lap on the track. With the car required to make the race on speed, the team worked hard to repair the damage and get Yeley back on track in time to run four solid laps before practice ended.
The efforts paid off in Saturday's late-afternoon qualifying session, with all three Front Row entries making the starting field for the AdvoCare 500. Yeley had the speed to make the starting grid in 31st, Gilliland qualified 36th and Kvapil qualified on speed in 41st. Kasey Kahne took the pole, holding off a threat from Clint Bowyer, who will start second. Tony Raines, David Stremme, Geoffrey Bodine and T.J. Bell did not qualify for the starting field.
The teams now prepare to race under the lights in Sunday's AdvoCare 500 -- and hope a rain-threatening forecast for Sunday night is wrong. Coverage of the holiday-weekend event begins at 7:30pm ET on ESPN.
