The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series looks for a rain-free weekend for the first time in three races as the teams go racing at Michigan International Speedway. The weekend started with a midday practice session on Friday, where the No. 38 Ford of Travis Kvapil and No. 55 Ford of J.J. Yeley found good speed as soon as they hit the track -- good news for the two cars that needed to qualify for the race on speed. The No. 34 Ford of David Gilliland worked past a minor electrical issue on the car early in practice to turn some good practice laps as well.
A mid-afternoon qualifying session came later in the day, where hotter temperatures threatened to slow down the field overall. All three Front Row cars actually ran faster laps than they did earlier in practice and successfully locked themselves into the starting grid for the Pure Michigan 400. The Nos. 38 and 55 were among the fastest of the cars that had to qualify on speed, with Kvapil qualifying 27th and Yeley 31st. Gilliland put an improved No. 34 car on the grid in 39th.
Sunday's race will have a Roush Fenway Racing front row, with Greg Biffle earning his first pole of the season and Matt Kenseth starting beside him. Johnny Sauter (7), T.J. Bell (50) and Erik Darnell (46) did not make the field, giving the No. 38 team an opportunity to gain some owner points on the No. 7 entry.
Next on the schedule, the teams will have a morning practice session on Saturday to work on race set-ups for Sunday's event. The Pure Michigan 400 will air live on ESPN, with coverage beginning Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. And, in a nice change of pace, the race-day weather forecast looks clear.

David Gilliland |
Comments from No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford team driver David Gilliland after qualifying at Michigan:
"That was definitely much better than we were in practice. Peter (crew chief Peter Sospenzo) and the guys fixed it up about 50 percent better than it was earlier. The drive off the corner was much better, but still just too tight rolling the center. But we're going to continue to work on it during practice tomorrow, and we've definitely got room to make it better."

Travis Kvapil |
Comments from No. 38 Long John Silver's Ford team driver Travis Kvapil after qualifying at Michigan:
"I felt like this was one of our better tracks the first time we were here. And this is the first time my crew chief, Jay Guy, and I get to go to a track for the second time together. So, we had a good notebook to look at coming here, and we had really good speed right off the truck. I'm pretty happy with it. The car was just a little on the free side, but it was the fastest we went all day and got it in the show really well. I'm excited about working on some race-trim stuff tomorrow and having a good day Sunday."

J.J. Yeley |
Comments from No. 55 Front Row Motorsports Ford team driver J.J. Yeley after qualifying at Michigan:
"It wasn't a bad lap. Sometime we can't get exactly what we want to get. A 90-percent lap is always a safe thing to do. My Turns 1 and 2, I know I left a bunch on the table. We struggled with the car being a little bit too tight, and this is one of those places where it's really easy to overdrive it. So, I just backed my entries up and just made a nice, conservative lap, obviously fast enough to make the race." | |
